IMO before we complain about scheduling, we need to have better OOC results. Then more we lose to Canisius, Niagara, Northern Iowa, etc (quality teams, but not at the top of the pyramid), the less likely we are to be matched up with the “A” level teams. It also doesn’t help that we are not affiliated with a yearly MTE where we can show a history of success and use that to influence matchups. Dominate the yearly OOC, end the cringe-worthy losses, then we can make a case for better matchups. We’re 8-7 against P5 teams since 2018 season. And you guys want to play … checks notes .. less games against them? Got it. Why not move to the MAAC then? Or do we want to consider D2 so we can avoid the A bracket?

One of the great games in Bona history was in the 1959/60 season, at the Armory, a 90-89 3 overtime victory. When I get back home I will do more research on that thriller.

PROVIDENCE vs ST. BONAVENTURE December 14, Mohegan Sun. This will not really be a neutral site as it is less than an hour from Providence. The Friars were initially slotted for the 2024 HOF Tournament at Mohegan Sun with Boston College, UMass, and Temple. PC was to be the big attendance driver. They however pulled out for three games versus a field of Arizona, Gonzaga, Indiana, Louisville, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Davidson at the Battle 4 Atlantis. They agreed to this other game at the casino in order to be let out of their HOF Tournament contract.

Also it is practically a home game for Coach Schmidt. Coaches Neal, Lowe and Valentine, each have Mass ties/roots so playing at Mohegan Sun seems like a natural fit. Go Bonnies!!

Mohegan Sun no more than 40 minutes from Fort Bonaventure, I will obviously be attending this game. Have to jump on the good seats early, PC will undoubtedly be monopolizing tickets.

Mohegan Sun arena, capacity for basketball 9,323.
Scheduling this game brought back memories of seeing Providence v Bonas my freshman year in the RC. Ernie D had graduated, but the Friars still had Marvin Barnes and Kevin Stacom returning from what was probably their best team in their history the previous year. I remember sitting on the bottom of the bleachers under the Providence basket watching them warm up, I was counting how many outside jumpshots Kevin Stacom made in the warm up because I swear to God he didn't miss a single outside jumper during warm ups. He wasn't missing. I counted him hitting 47 consecutive outside jumpers during the warmup before the horn sounded to start the game. I was like "We're fucked, these guys are deadly." During the game Stacom was guarded by Pat Olivetto and it became clear Pat had one job that game, stop Kevin Stacom. Olivetto played phenomenal defense on Stacom. I think Stacom finished like 3 for 17 or something like that. Taught me a big lesson, that warmups don't mean shit. I also remember that game how Providence took the ball out so unbelieveably quickly after a Bonas made basket, they were actually able to generate fast breaks after we scored a made basket, like five or six times they got fast break baskets after we scored. Have never seen a team do that so much in a game since.
Anyway, I remember we were up 5 points with like a minute and 51 left, and I'm thinking, we can beat these guys. Then Marvin Barnes took over. Barnes went on a total tear, scored 4 or five baskets in a row on spinning power drives to the basket for short jumpers or lay ins. Price was totally overmatched by Barnes those last two minutes, absolutely unstoppable. We were screaming "Tire Iron, Tire Iron" every time he touched the ball, he could give a shit. When we shot and missed it was Barnes skying for every rebound. Providence ended up winning by 5, going away. Marvin Barnes was one of the greatest college basketball players that I ever saw, live. Maybe some of the fellow old timers on here remember that game.

Bad News Barnes (or “Marvelous”) was an absolute beast on the court, as well as a strange and menacing human being.
Barnes averaged 21 points, 18 rebounds and 3 assists in three seasons at PC. He led the nation in rebounding in 1973-74. He held the PC record with 52 points which might still stand today. He also held the NCAA tourney record with 10 straight made FGs without a miss to open the game, but that has since been broken.
Barnes ran into numerous legal issues during and after his PC and pro career. I had a few brief encounters with him during the mid-1980s and the stories of his run-ins with local law enforcement in many cities are legendary. He bounced around the NBA, ABA, CBA and Euro leagues while fighting substance abuse and a dangerous temper. He was caught snorting coke during a NBA game while with the Celtics. He passed away 10 years ago at age 62 but he did often speak to youth groups and camps — pleading with kids not to make the same mistakes that plagued his life.
Sad story … but one of the greatest talents ever to play college hoops.

There was another Bad News Barnes, Jim Barnes, came out of Texas Western College graduating in 1964. This Bad News was the opposite of the other. Won an Olympic gold in basketball, 1st overall pick by the NYKnicks.
I arrived in El Paso the year he graduated, 1964. So, I never saw him in college....2 years later, his school won the National Championship with his clone, David big daddy Lattin being the enforcer.
