Great points bigcat. Much like the saying "You can't teach height", well you can't teach athleticism either. High IQ and skills (shooting being one) can be taught - WORK ETHIC and HEART are certainly critical traits as well. Without Raw Talent and Athleticism - it will only take you so far. Shooters are a dime a dozen - Shooters with the ability to knock down 3s with a dude in their face all night is another story. I would take Athleticism over Shooters any day - as would most coaches - all other things being equal. Talent - IQ - Work Ethic - Heart, you have that recipe and you can go as far as your talent will take you. Coaching that can deploy said talent correctly then becomes most critical.

Is shooting critical for a successful season? The 2021-22 team (Osun and Kyle as seniors) won 23 games and reached semifinals of NIT. Team had 23 wins 2nd most for Schmidt at Bona. Conference games they shot a horrible 31.2% from 3s (12th in A-10) and overall were one of the worse 3 point shooting teams in the nation (226th). Bona82.5 brings up “WORK ETHIC and HEART.” Work ethic and heart, becomes infectious if you have a player, who sets an example for the team. The 2021-22 team had Kyle Lofton. This team has Melvin. Of all the players I’ve watched during the summer, Melvin is my best example of work ethic and heart. Then you add he is very vocal and is a natural born leader. Last year's team had solid shooters, but lacked many of the intangibles BigCat and Bona82.5 mention. Many of these intangibles are critical in developing chemistry. Something they definitely lacked was a Melvin Council on their team. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/2022.htm

Let’s see how if we have a weak 3 pt shooting team whether our athleticism equates to wins this year. 3>2. I hope I am wrong.

Completely agree with Joe48 "Let’s see how if we have a weak 3 pt shooting team whether our athleticism equates to wins this year." Shooting is a big concern, especially considering Bonnies 3 best shooters (Lajae, Jonah and Noah) only 1 starts. Hopeful teams better athleticism along with having 3 players who excel at creating (Melvin, Dasonte, and Noah) leads to a team with better chemistry than last year's team.
I also believe this will be a better defensive team. Starting lineup has 5 solid defensive players. We all know Noel is a solid defensive player (strength of his game). Melvin and Dasonte excel at man defense. Lajae is an impressive defensive player himself. Remember Jaxon had a very impressive 40 blocks in just 24.9 minutes per game. Backups Mike, Chance and Miles are solid defensive players.

Defense and fundamentals (boxing out) can overcome poor shooting nights. Like Davidson for instance. Last year we looked way more athletic while they looked more fundamentally sound and they played Bonnies tough at home. It's surprising last years team shot the 3 at 36 percent. I felt like I watched numerous games were they shot horribly from three.
Canisius they shot 4-20 20% Auburn 3-24. 12% akron 4-15 26% Richmond 5-17 29% George mason 7-25. 28% duquesne 2-13 15% VCU.5-22 22% loyala chicago 4-18. 22% duquesne 6-24 25%
That's some pretty bad shooting night with high amount of threes launched. So the shooting was not a consistent 36 percent. I think a team that consistently shoots 33 percent from 3 would be better than a hot/cold 36 percent team.

Good points coach. Stats never tell the whole story - I am more aligned with the Bill Parcells analogy : "You are what your record says you are ..."

I think 36 percent is always better than 33 percent myself

I think 36 percent is always better than 33 percent myself Even better if it's 36% and you claim it's 51%....
