I was about to mention the class of Greg Sanders and Glen Hagen too, Baron was in my class with Jerry Beckles (who transferred after one season of JV ball) and Essie Hollis that was not a bad class either. But I agree on paper next years class is potentially superb, and should keep the program extremely competitive over the next four years. Like everyone else I cannot wait for next season for both the men's and women's programs as they are starting to get the prospects that are difference makers. Go Bona's!

Whats an even more interesting discussion is the 'more significant' recruiting classes - not necessarily the best talent/high volume - but considering where the program was - really changed the game.
Timmy Winn/Caswell Cyrus class really grows when thought in this way - and likely even more so was the recruiting done by Tiny Green/Tom Chapman to bring in the Harry moore and then David Vanterpool and Quackenbush and Nii Richards which really paved the way for the Winn/Cyrus classes and the first NCAA in 22 years in 2000.... the classes all grow on each other
As good as this class is... its done on the recent past of a 2012 ncaa bid,a recent nba 1st round draft pick and a conference just having 6 bids to the ncaa .... the classes recruited by Tiny Green had no such comparable recent successes to help convince those guys to come and really turn the needle from pointing down to turning up

JH, that is a good point about the Chapman era. Didn't he also recruit Michael Burnett? However, It seems, that either Schmidt changed his recruiting philosophy this year or he is 'closing' much better. Don't know the answer but I like it!!!

Best recruiting class in the last 30 years has to be Tim Winn and Caswell Cyrus class. Both were recruited by ACC and Big East schools. This class could have been even better with Jamaal Magliore, who was an NBA all star and spent 7 seasons in the NBA. Baron and his staff spent 4 years recruiting Jamaal. Kentucky lost a big man, Rick Pitino scheduled a last minute flight to Toronto. Jamaal signs with Kentucky minutes after Pitino walks in the door. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamal_MaglioreBest recruiting class I ever saw was Greg Sanders and Glenn Hagan's class. Greg Sanders is the all time leading scorer and to this day is the greatest shooter I've ever seen for the Bonnies. Greg's game was from outside and he had a career shooting percentage of 53.8%. Put it in perspective Marques Green's career shooting percentage was 39.5% and Bremer's was slightly better at 40.3%. Glen Hagan is the best guard I've ever seen wearing the brown and white. His role was to distribute the ball to Sanders and Essie Hollis (6th all time leading scorer) but he still scored enough to be Bonnies 19th all time leading scorer. Bonnies need a last second shot the ball was in Glenn's hands and he always delivered by scoring the winning basket or setting someone up with an open shot. All right who can remember Bob Laniers teammates on his freshman team? I remember seeing Billy Kalbaugh, Willie Mangham (dynamite guard from NYC) and of course Bob Lanier. Anyone remember who else was on that freshman team. I've always believed Willie Mangham was the missing piece to a national championship. He was that good! Unfortunately Willie had other issues.

Jim Gagnier was the other scholarship player on the freshman team.

Yes, and Gagnier looked pretty good to me on the frosh team but never was great shakes on the varsity. I will relate a humorous anecdote about Gagnier and our famous classmate. The prof was taking role in the first class and came to Gagnier's name and asked how he pronounced it. The reply was gon-yay, the French pronunciation. OK, down the list he goes and pronounces Lanier in the English mode. Big Bob stops him and says "No, it's Lon-yay!" Everyone had a good laugh.

It seems the last few years we were after guys who were being recruited also by the high BCS schools. It was exciting but we kept coming in 2nd!.....It seemed to me this year the players we were in with were being recruited mostly by low BCS, mid major types. Was this a conscious decision by the staff?

Vory Billups! City Honors High, i think. It was a real blow to the program at the time when he was unable to play. I think he was an O'Brien recruit(?).

An article from Sports Illustrated and Marfans Syndrome. Vory Billups is mentioned. I believe he kept his schloraship for his 4 years at Bona's and graduated in 1988. Pages 2 & 3 talk about Vory, but you should read the whole article. www.cnnsi.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1064510/1/index.htm
