if you look at the sbu roster in the late 60s thru early 70s...the sbu hoops foot print was Rochester [due to heavy alum contacts and head coach's hometown] Washington dc [ben rusin - sp] and nyc [alums and long time HS contacts]...sbu worked buffalo/Niagara falls hard..but you have to remember that Niagara was cranking out good teams and fat frank was had a personality larger than life...Niagara hit nyc/li hard and got some locals like Ollie harper..meanwhile, canisius hit wny very hard...macaluso, massielo, roger brown, duke richardson etc were all local kids..then they shifted [or got shiftier]..they got gary stewart from Toledo...he was a tough forward from Toledo..i once saw him fight cleve royster in the aud...canisius put together an interesting team with local hero mel Montgomery, charley Jordan from indy [no one would touch him due to grades and criminal stuff] Kenny kee from dc, and two guards from the Pittsburgh area..prosser and stokes and the granddaddy of all bandits larry fogle...fogle was the leading scorer in the country who came from sw Louisiana which got shut down due to recruiting stuff...they were good, but even canisius had a hard time keeping them in school...bonnies got lanier, john hayes, tepas, grys from the buff/nf area...but college hoops was changing...as mentioned previously..acc schools were coming to town..patton was a stud..driesell had plenty of $$ to spread around and chris ended up in college park..truitt and ricky Williams [brother of jimmy at cuse] were studs..but were dirty..even in HS..so they ended up at long beach and south Carolina [who was paying guys from the north to come to school-see tom riker]if you look at the all wny teams from the early 70s...morning star from Depew went to Virginia, varick cutler from n Tonawanda went to lasalle, McDowell from baker to Tulsa...the acc, sec and big 12 were now integrated and were recruiting typical bonnie hotbeds hard..dc, nyc, upstate ny, etc...prior to this, sbu could get a first team all nyc or dc kid to come to sbu...not anymore..so the bonnies got creative..as weise geared it down..satalin hit ohio..tim waterman, erie for hollis, roch for urzetta and hagen...dc for sanders..Greenwich for brian west...bonnies couldn't get mike Russell into school, hence he ended up in texas..they did want royster badly as he was coached in prep school by a former sbu student

the infamous coach at baker victory was joe correy...never met a good player that he didnt try to recruit. i think that both ricky williams and truitt started out at timon, but ended up at baker..will have to look that up in my old catholic league playoff programs...dont forget phil scaffidi [niagara and pirates] oleh czmola [buff st, i think] and pete ____ who played at lemoyne..Ohare had billy scheerer [sp] who played baseball in the majors for 7/8 years and now is an assistant GM with the white sox Yes - Joe Correy. Funny, I woke up in the middle of the night last night, and his name came back to me. During my Jr High and High School days, if you hung around the playgrounds or Tosh Collins community center, you would see Joe quite regularly. Back to Billy Truit. He was my favorite guy on the Timon teams when he was there. I avoided trying to remember why he left Timon, but after seeing someone else mention it, I do believe it was grades and generally not being an academically oriented guy.

blogs.buffalonews.com/preptalk/2012/03/benefit-for-basketball-coach-joe-corey-is-may-3-.htmlunfortunately for ricky Williams and truitt..they were hit by a perfect storm...they were great ballers and very personable kids..they could get by in the classroom with a smile and a wink..back then, little three hoops were big, the buffalo braves were in town and hoops in general were big time...corey and joe piscopo at Neumann were notorious for getting kids to move from school to school...heck, walsh even recruited kids from the west valley youth camp -dewey taylor was from there...best leaper bar none..better than gantt or Mangham..dewey was 6' and he rejected several of the 6'9" pattons shots during his senior year..but with Williams and truitt..they were Hollywood and went big time..couldn't hack it for various reasons...both left their respective schools...never amounted to much...now if they would have enrolled at sbu under the watchful eyes of the fransiscan fathers !!!!!!

dewey taylor was quite a leaper, but was about 6-3 as i recall. saw him play at the R.C. as a prelim to the bona vs B.C. game back in dec 1971. as far as being a better leaper than gantt, or mangham , i dont think so. but yes, he could get up.

at best, dewey was 6'1"...but I recall him being measured in the locker room at 6'0" even..that is what made him such a freak of nature...we played in the aud prior to a few braves games and in the catholic league tournements. if you recall, gantt couldn't shoot a lick from the field as his leap threw him out of whack.that was deweys problem...he could drive to the hole and score and leap out of the gym..dewey graduated walsh in '74..went to JCC and played for joe creola who had a good thing going there until it became public that several of his players were working out with his wife !

WNY sending several players to D1, with a few going to high D1, every year.
What happened to that?

its a good thing they signed glenn price that year. he wasnt announced until june 21 1970 in the courier express. the remainder of that class was awful. the other 3 signees that year were billy jenkins, rich murray, and walt schafer. none of the 3 were D1 caliber players. price is one of the all time under rated players ever at bona in my opinion. Seems like a real missed opportunity to have the program continue to grow into the 70s....

The head coach and staff just road the back of Lanier and did nothing to bring in top flight recruits in the late sixties. Could have been a powerhouse program? Good thing they were even able to get Price.
