Hurley had enough voice, after chirping at refs all night, to say the following post game.
“He’d been playing well coming in,” said Hurley. “They’re championship-caliber in our league right now with three high all-conference players, then a guy like Denzel Gregg that’s looking like a most improved player right now.”
“We’ve got some top 50s,” Hurley said of his recruits, particularly Iverson. “I don’t know that Denzel was top 50 coming out of high school. … Our highly touted guys didn’t give us enough against their hard-working, self-made guys, like Denzel Gregg.”

Enjoyed reading your takeaways, njbonnie08, and thanks for recognizing Taqqee's clutch offensive rebound. An observation I'd like to add is that, knowing whoever has the ball at that point will get fouled and he's not the best guy at the line, he immediately gave up the rock to Jay. Jay was fouled and converted. Smart basketball.

I was stuck following the ESPN play by play on my phone for this one, but am impressed by the turnaround on guarding Jarvis Garrett late in the game. Garrett was on fire and put URI up 4 with 3:39 left and was 4-5 with 10 points in the second half. He follows that up by going 0-3, getting stuffed twice, and committing a turnover.
On the other side, Gregg hits a go-ahead three and sinks two free throws after stealing the ball from Garrett and getting fouled.
Gregg is going to be huge for this team down the stretch. He's another guy who can be the man any given night, but with Posley, Adams, and Wright around, he never has to be the man.

A few observations from the game last night. - As everyone knows Denzel was the star of the game last night. Did you know that Denzel has scored double digits in all 4 conference games? In fact he is averaging 14.75 ppg during A-10 games. Schmidt says he needs to find a 4th scorer. Well I think he already has one with Denzel. - Agree with Vinny from the Bona Blog. Couldn't believe Idris would attempt a 3 during crunch time, especially since he missed one just minutes earlier. Then Idris comes up with the biggest rebound of the year from a desperation 3 from Marcus. I agree with Vinny Idris stat line is not very good, but he is a player Schmidt can count on. - Nelson got on Schmidt's bad side early with him pulling up at the foul line and firing a quick shot. Schmidt benched him immediately after the shot. Another mistake by Nelson was when he was talking with Schmidt near half court and Schmidt hollered at him the ball was ready to be in bounded. Nelson hurried back on defense, but unfortunately for him his man hit an open jumper. Nelson was again immediately benched. I thought Nelson should have played more. Have to attribute this to a learning experience for a freshman. - I thought Derrick looked really good while he played. Derrick had a tough match up with Martin and he held his own. Schmidt had a lot of doulbling down low on Martin whenever he received the ball on the low blocks. - Marcus struggled with his shooting, which can be credited to RI's tough D with special attention to Marcus. but he had a couple incredible drives. Especially the one at the end of the game where he went flying past all the RI defenders on a fast break and finished with a physical layup with a RI defender attempting a block. ** Bonnies have a terrific trio with Dion, Marcus and Jaylen. Now you add Denzel who is averaging 14.75 ppg for A-10 games along with 2 rapidly improving freshmeen. This is turning into a lot better season than any of us could have predicted. www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/players/playerpage/2104954/denzel-gregg

“We lost our composure down the stretch,” URI coach Dan Hurley said. “Our highly touted guys didn’t give us enough against their hard-working, self-made guys.”
So ... Hurley calling out his guys for losing their composure. Pot, kettle.
And isn't it his job to get the most of the guys on his team? Those "self-made" Bona guys he talks about have a good coaching staff helping them reach their full potential, don't they?

Here are from observations from my little (940 mile) midweek road trip to the enchanted mountains:
1. Rhode Island plays as good a defense as any team in the league. They are big and quick, and don't give up a lot of open looks.
2. During the last part of the game, Denzel and Dion were solid, defending the beast who is Hassan Martin. I like our big men, and they will be good players, but I think we're presently a better team with our forwards occupying the 5 spot.
3. What is the deal with the City of Olean just leaving heaps of snow in the middle of Union and State streets? I know they get a lot of snow, but can't they load it into trucks and dump it into the river?
4. Idris and Marcus lead by example, playing hard on both ends of the court. Not saying that others don't, but to me, it looks like these two never dog it.
5. During all those years of people complaining about the Bonaventure offense just passing the ball around the perimeter and chucking up a shot, that is essentially what the Rhode Island offense is. I know it was a huge loss when EC Matthews went down, but Hurley needs to do a better job on the offensive end. As good as their defense is, their offense looked dreadful at times.
6. I am not sure if the Time Warner Sports PxP dude was drunk, as I wasn't subjected to his rambling broadcast, but it sure didn't take him long to get to Angees after the game for some refreshing beverages and a pizza. Hell, he almost beat me there. While at the bar, his sidekick was regaling us with how he had to call his disheveled partner to wake him up for a ride to Olean. Goofy explained that his girlfriend (what a peach she must be) gets up really early for work and he fell back asleep. I am presently applying to work for that network.
7. At the outset of the game, I admittedly was disappointed in the size of the crowd. However, the volume got turned up when it needed to be, and the crowd came alive to spark our team. Measuring the decibels in terms of airlines, it was as if a 727 was taking off. On Tuesday night, it will sound like the Space Shuttle.
8. Hurley's antics will not get him any close calls whatsoever. His shtick is tiring, and he's not even yelling at me. He spends half of each timeout berating the officials, instead of telling his players what offense to run. In the not too distant future, I predict that Ram fans will be wishing Jim Baron was back.
9. The campus did look lovely under the freshly fallen snow.
10. Go Bona's. Beat Duquesne!

I read through the RI board and the game thread and saw 3 themes: 1)self loathing and how bad their offense is 2) Hurley's attitude negatively impacting players and how he is basically Jim Baron with more fanfare. They dont like Baron much over there and Hurley is approaching that level. His antics seem to rub off on the players and when he loses composure, they do too. 3) They do not like Four McGlynn or Terrell very much

Hurley will wear out his welcome soon enough if he hasn't done so already. He needs to grow up. Screamers and whiny ref-baiters have no place in the game. At any level.
Nice to know URI faithful aren't fond of that carpetbagger Fo' McGlynn. Bricklayer.
