Attached is Wayne Torrey’s obituary. As a freshman Torrey was the starting safety, kickoff returner, punt returner and backup fullback for Bonas’ last football team in 1951. — Highlight was 84 yard punt return for a touchdown against Don Shula’s John Carroll University. — Played safety against Johnny Unitas. It was Unitas first game as a starting collegiate quarterback. — Unitas threw two 4th quarter touchdowns to the guy Torrey was defending. Bonnies would come back and win the game against Unitas' Louisville team. Torrey talks about the wild finish and the fact that most fans in attendance didn’t realize there were still a few seconds remaining. “Your paper was right,” said Torrey, who had always thought that Czaja's game-winner was longer than 37 yards. “Everybody flooded on the field because they’d thought we’d won it. But we did have to kick it off to them. “As I’m running off, I get taken down by some of the fans — it was the only game I’d ever gotten knocked out in. When I came to, the game was over.” Torrey said following about playing against Unitas “he was in the same boat I was at the time: a freshman. He didn’t have much notoriety at the time, but he turned out to be a pretty good one, didn’t he?” “I’ve been telling this story for years: The only claim I have of playing football is that Johnny Unitas hit me in the face with the ball twice,” he said with a laugh. www.legacy.com/obituaries/oleantimesherald/obituary.aspx?pid=198690074www.oleantimesherald.com/sports/torrey-recalls-facing-unitas-in-bona-debut/article_f7779cb2-0b13-11e5-89aa-eb3f96e1a370.html#tncms-source=loginwww.wellsvilledaily.com/article/20130326/NEWS/303269915

What a great tradition - Bona football lives on in our memories. We had a very good post WWII run, with some outstanding athletes Ted Marchiboda, Jack Butler, Wayne Torrey and many, many others. Sad to think that the program was mothballed at a time when it was enjoying great success. Professor Malcolm V.T. Wallace wrote a history of Bona football in the early 1980's, its an enjoyable read if you can find a copy (maybe in the bookstore or the Friedsam Memorial Library). Go Bonas!

What time was that when we were in the “UC” after the barns burned? Mid-night? Crazy times...

Reading about Wayne Torrey being a backup fullback to Bernie Popson, reminded me of a recruiting story.
It was the fall of 1982 when a rumor of Bonnies being involved with 3 high profile high school recruits. In the Olean Times Herald Jim O’Brien acknowledged Bonnies were recruiting 6’10” Dave Popson (Bernie Popson’s son), 6'8" Tom Sheehey (Mike Sheehey’s younger brother) and 6'8" John Bowen from Warren, Pennsylvania, which was just an hour from Bona.
Rumor was O’Brien invited Sheehey and Popson to visit Bona together, along with Tom’s older brother Mike. Mike was a transfer from Syracuse and was ready to play next 2 years at Bona. Dave Popson was already familiar with the campus as his dad was just inducted into Bona’s Hall of Fame that fall. Rumor was Popson and Sheehey developed a close friendship. It was talked about both decided to attend the same school, much like Roosevelt Bouie and Cliff Warwell did 5 years earlier. It was said Mike Sheehey made a guarantee that his little brother was coming to Bona. It was hoped if Popson and Sheehey came to Bona John Bowen would follow.
Result was Tom Sheehey was the only one who had Bona listed among his final choices and it was probably to appease his brother Mike. Sheehey signed with Virginia and was a 4 year starter. Popson signed with North Carolina and was a 2 year starter for the Tar Heels. O’Brien said he felt John Bowen made a mistake signing with Notre Dame and would have been much better off at Bona. O’Brien was right as Bowen sat at the end of the bench for 2 years before leaving Notre Dame. Bowen is not listed as playing for another D-1 school.

I thought that Tom Sheehy and Olden Polynice befriended one another at a camp and made a pact to attend college together (they did-at UVA) Wasn’t it was those two that were to visit Bona’s together Terry Holland was a frequent visitor to Rochester during Tom’s recruitment

The 1982-83 recruiting season for Jim O’Brien was filled with big names. O’Brien recruited 2 future NBA players with Olden Polynice and David Popson, along with Tom Sheehey who was a 4 year starter at Virginia. Unlike Popson, Sheehey and Bowen, Polynice was very close to signing with the Bonnies. The key person in O’Brien recruiting Polynice was his newly added administrative assistant Rich Sutter. Following is from attached Olean Times Herald article "Could Sutter’s dream to coach Bona come true?." “Things looked bad for me and my family at that time,” he said. Then one day the phone rang. It was former Connecticut assistant Jim O’Brien, whom Sutter had become close to during summer camps at UConn. Sutter would bring future NBA player and All Hallows product Olden Polynice to those camps. O’Brien had just been named coach at St. Bonaventure. He offered Sutter a scholarship and an administrative assistant position on his staff. I think it is obvious the reason O’Brien added Sutter to his staff was to recruit Olden Polynice. All Hallows High School in the Bronx is the connection between Sutter and Polynice. Sutter was an assistant basketball coach at All Hallows and Polynice played basketball there during high school. bonabandwagon.proboards.com/thread/3021/sutters-dream-coach-bona-come

What time was that when we were in the “UC” after the barns burned? Mid-night? Crazy times... I think it was closer to 2 am...we all sat up in the reds on the Richter side...Fr Reginald said he didn't consider the barns burning "an act of intimidation" and that if there was another incident (I forget his exact words) he would close down the school and send us all home...which meant in those days the end of our student deferment and hello "Vietnam U" (which is what my dad screamed into the phone when I called home and told him what happened)...i thought our student leaders (President Charlie Dougherty and Vice-President Mary Engel) did a great job of representing the student body in those "crazy times"...

I think that the Senator is correct, it was well past midnight. Our RA pounded on the doors yelling "Convocation! UC! Now!". I had no idea what a convocation was. As a wide-eyed 18 year old kid the enormity and stupidity of that action made a profound impact on me. Sadly, 50 years later the people of the world are still burning and destroying to make a point. When will we ever learn.

bowen ended up his career at gannon...put up very nice #s there. Sbu's initial " recruitment " of him was a divisive issue for the hoops staff. During the process sbu mentioned that bona hoops was probably a more talent appropriate destination for young john as opposed to ND...of course, this upset his parental units to no end and ended any chance of bowen coming to SBU. In the end, he found the proper level of school. He was also a very good student which, in the end is what it is all about... eriesportshalloffame.org/inductee/john-bowen/
