A-L track star Napoleon named Gatorade National Player of Year. Angelina Napoleon proved she’s the best in the nation in the high school steeplechase. But this week, Napoleon received affirmation that she’s the best of the best. The Allegany-Limestone graduate, who recently wrapped a state championship and national record-breaking senior season, won the Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Player of the Year Award, as announced by the sports drink company on Thursday. The award came as a surprise to Napoleon during a school assembly Tuesday, just days after her graduation from ALCS. Napoleon returned to school to be honored with a New York state proclamation from Assemblyman Joe Giglio and Senator George Borrello for her national record-breaking track and field season. But near the end of Tuesday’s assembly, representatives from Gatorade came forward to surprise Napoleon with the award. She not only had won the New York Player of the Year Award, but the national award as well. Past winners of the National Player of the Year have gone on to become some of the biggest names in their respective sports, from Allyson Felix in track to Peyton Manning in football and LeBron James and Candace Parker in basketball. www.oleantimesherald.com/sports/high_school/a-l-track-star-napoleon-named-gatorade-national-player-of-year/article_5242af18-1684-11ee-a55e-dbd2a2ceceaa.html

Angelina is the best of the best in her specialty and a straight-A student.
I'll be looking for her on ACC Network next season with the Wolfpack.
A tremendous honor for her and recognition to A-L.

More Angelina...she won the USA U20 3k steeplechase in Oregon recently
A pic of the podium winners showed Ange and the runners-up. But what startled me was her m idsection -- totally ripped! I'd love to know what her training regimen is (it certainly isn't solely running). She must be hitting the weights to boost her overall strength.
Her physique is on a par with older competitors. No wonder she was far advanced in high school. I can't wait to see how she'll do in ACC meets.

JP's article "On Evans and a potential Bona hoops rotation" contains comments from weight room Coach Fiske. -- “Barry got here at 185 pounds and (he’s) now at almost 215,” Fiske noted last week. “He had no love for the weights when he got here but has become a weight room warrior for us. Still have a lot of work ahead of us, but love the progress.” -- The 6-foot-8 forward has apparently instead used a shaky end to the 2022-23 campaign as motivation to be better this winter. -- If Fiske’s post and his campus presence is any indication, Evans is on his way toward tangible improvement as a sophomore. -- “Two-hundred-and-seventy pounds of twisted steel and looking to help bring the A-10 trophy home,” Fiske said of Noel Brown. “Humble, hard-working and a great personality.” JP states "it had become clear by last season’s end that Bona needed some help at both point guard and perimeter scoring" when giving gives his projected starting lineup . Starting lineup -- Chad, Yann, Charles, Daryl and Mika. JP states "if ever there was a year in which Schmidt didn’t have to play his starting guards 35-plus minutes a night, this could be it (although that’s been said before and still needs to be proven in practice)" when giving his 4 man rotation off the bench. -- Moses returns to 6th man. Noel, Barry and Kyrell fills out JP's projected 4 man rotation. JP states following in regards to Miles, Duane and Melian; "question going forward will be how the possible emergence of a freshman or two might change things come November. www.oleantimesherald.com/sports/columnists/on-evans-and-a-potential-bona-hoops-rotation/article_04de2cb2-2119-11ee-a89c-9713d7b4c500.html

Read the article and it is a good piece. Going into it, my mind was exactly where JP’s is — and this only further reinforced my thoughts.
I’ll admit some bias, but I just feel that this really might be our best team in the Schmidt era. The 9-man rotation (on paper) is better than any we’ve had. I really believe that. Now time will tell if it clicks and if everyone can accept their roles (this is going to be a huge ask in my opinion) but I don’t think there’s been a deeper team here. Maybe not even in my 30 years of following the team (I might start another post on that hot take).
Finally, based off this article, I’ll just add that I hope Luc, Evans and the three freshmen (Martinez, Rose and Thompson) stick around next season. I can’t see any of those 5, except for Luc, getting more than 10 minutes per game. And I’m not sure any of the 3 freshmen play any role whatsoever this season (I know there are surprises every year, but it just seems highly unlikely given this year’s roster construction).
I see the rotation as:
Venning (30) Brown (10) Farrell (32) Evans (8) Pride (32-38) Flowers (2-8) Banks (32-38) Flowers (2-8) Adams-Woods (30) Luc (10)

I saw a note on a recent article on Pete Ash that it was JP's last one for the OTH. Wonder if this includes Bona coverage?

I saw a note on a recent article on Pete Ash that it was JP's last one for the OTH. Wonder if this includes Bona coverage? Anyone know what's going on at the OTH and who will be covering Bona hoops this year? Sam Wilson? ---------------------------------------- A well done PBS report from Aug 2, 2023 on the loss of a local paper in Texas (featuring a researcher from Syracuse):

Time for a student from the BV (I think the Intrepid is no longer) to step up this season and establish themselves as they ply their trade. You’ll have a very captive audience!

Title of Sam Wilson’s article in OTH, perfectly describes Charles Pride's game “Dog Mentality: Pride brings more than scoring to Bona.” Highlights from article. — “Known as “Chuck” to his teammates and coaches.” — Almost chose Bona after Putnam, “almost became part of Bona’s entrenched “Putnam pipeline” much sooner. He received a scholarship offer from Bona out of Putnam and was “very interested” in his first go-round as a recruit.” — Intrigued by Bona “I was just watching them play because I knew there were a bunch of Putnam guys here. I remember I played against Daryl, (while Banks was at The Patrick School at the prep level), so I kind of knew who he was.” — “Pride said one of the biggest adjustments is learning the playbook: “Coach Schmidt has about 1,000 plays,” he said, which requires lots of film work with coaches or individually.” — “Pride wants to be a leader. Even as a newcomer, he feels comfortable speaking up.” Pride states “Just to be a dog,” he said of his role. “To have that dog mentality.” — “I want to be the hardest working player on the court,” Pride said. “I want people to watch me play, I want to play against people who know I’m the hardest playing player on the court. I want the opposing team to kind of fear playing against me, thinking that I’ll never stop running and never stop playing hard. I’m going to play hard 24/7.” www.oleantimesherald.com/newsletter/dog-mentality-pride-brings-more-than-scoring-to-bona/article_a3191060-7928-11ee-a7e6-cf311526a1f7.html

Attached is JP Butler’s article “Schmidt: Bonnies success will begin with Brown, Bowen.” Following are comments from JP and Schmidt. Though the game over time has evolved; now emphasizing spacing, small-ball lineups and 3-point shooting, Schmidt has remained steadfast in his belief that success at least starts with your primary ball-handler and big man. Schmidt states “To be successful, you need a good point guard and a good center.” And he thinks the Bonnies are set in those areas again this winter. — Noel Brown THE 6-FOOT-11 center will undoubtedly be a fan favorite, perhaps even a singular point around which the Bonnies rally. He also came on strong toward the end of last season, posting 18 points in a February win over Fordham and a combined 24 points in two Atlantic 10 Tournament victories, demonstrating what he might be capable of with more minutes. Schmidt states “Noel Brown, for whom I have immense respect for being the only rotational player to return amid the current climate, there’s a lot to be excited about. We need a double-double (out of him).” — Dasonte Bowen the 6-foot-2 point guard appeared in 51 games over two seasons with the Hawkeyes, averaging 3.7 points and 1.5 assists per game, though he might not have carved the place he expected at Iowa, he has the chance to mean “everything” at Bona. Schmidt states “he’s the quarterback; no matter how good you are or how bad you are, the point guard is everything, especially the way we play. He’s going to have the ball in his hands 80-90% of the time. He’s gotta be thinking like me and he has a really good understanding of how to play; his IQ is high, so he’s gonna be a very good player for us.” If there’s one thing it needs to improve upon from the outset, Schmidt acknowledged, it’s 3-point shooting. A year ago, Bowen (22.2%), Edwards (32.4%), Council Jr. (26.5%) and Moore (29.5%) all shot relatively poorly from distance. Part of that was shot selection, their new coach maintained. It’s also something that he believes will be rectified. “I think we have good shooters, they just have to take good shots,” he said, noting that Bowen shot 47% from distance in prep school. www.oleantimesherald.com/newsletter/schmidt-bonnies-success-will-begin-with-brown-bowen/article_6035c066-8775-11ef-96a4-c32f52c31300.html

Adding a few thoughts from JPs article. There were many games (especially later in the season) where I thought the offense looked better with Noel on the court. Often the Bonnies were too focused on getting the ball inside to Chad. It seemed the offense flowed better with Noel. Here are couple impressive stats from Chad. — Second leading scorer at 17.6 ppg for 40 minutes played and unlike Chad, Noel accomplished this without being the focus of the offense. His points occurred from the natural flow of the game. — Here is an incredible stat. Noel had 7 games where he scored double digit points. The Bonnies won all 7 of these games. * From what I’ve seen this summer and fall, Noel has been a monster underneath with Mike and Xander defending him. Noel is a solid starting center for the Bonnies. There will be a significant drop off at center when Noel goes to the bench. Despite Schmidt’s comment “Bowen shot 47% from distance in prep school” I have NOT seen a player who excels from shooting from distance. I hope it changes, but overall Dasonte struggles from shooting behind the arc. -- There wasn’t a player on the team last year, who could create shots for his teammates like Dasonte. Playmaking is a strength of his game. -- Dasonte is also very effective in creating shots for himself. Has a solid build, which helps him taking it to the basket. A very good one-on-one player. -- He is very quick (by far the quickest player on the team) and also a solid man defender. Melvin Council who I believe is the starting SG, appears to be the backup PG. Melvin has the same skills as Dasonte, but with more athleticism and a better shot from distance. -- Like Dasonte, Melvin is a solid distributor and excels with creating shots for teammates and himself. -- Last year team didn't have anyone, who could score off the dribble like Dasonte and Melvin. -- Schmidt states 4 players needs to improve their 3 point shot (Dasonte, Melvin, Jaxon and Chance) so far Melvin clearly displayed the best 3 pointer with Jaxon coming in 2nd place. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/2024.htmlwww.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/noel-brown-1/gamelog/2024
