JP Butler’s article “New guys need to care about being a Bonnie.” Article provides interesting reasons why players chose to become a Bonnie.
— Jonah Hinton learned of Bona through former star Jalen Adaway when the two played in the same pickup games in Texas.
— Dasonte Bowen became acquainted with Bona via former all-conference guard Matt Mobley. The two share a geographical kinship, with Mobley hailing from Worcester, Mass., and Bowen from down the road in Boston.
— Lajae Jones, quite amusingly, became aware of Bona because of “the guy with the long shorts.” That’s right, he took note of the brown Bona jersey in the now-viral photo in which Bonnies legend Marques Green is wearing his trademark baggy shorts down to his ankles.
— Melvin provided multiple reasons; Council grew up in nearby Rochester with current Bonnies guard Miles Rose (actually played against each other in high school). Council, according to multiple sources, had always wanted to play at St. Bonaventure. Fellow Rochester standout Jeenathan Williams was asked about the Reilly Center Council recalled and he was saying that this was one of the best fan bases that he played against. And Melvin’s grandma could come to every home game.

— Paul Hoffman and Matt Gantt told me they chose Bona, because they thought coming to Bona they could win a national title with Bob Lanier.
— Living in Erie Pennsylvania, Essie Hollis was a fan of Bob Lanier and the Bonnies.
— Greg Sanders wanted to be a big fish in a small pond. John Thompson always stated Sanders was the one that got away.
— It was a nun at Cardinal Mooney High School, who became instrumental into Bona recruiting Glenn Hagan.
— Syracuse high school teammates Earl Belcher and Marty Headd had a strong dislike of each other. Earl was offended that Syracuse recruited Marty and not him. He chose to go to the rival of Syracuse. He wanted to play against Marty every year to prove he was the better player. Earl accomplished this as he scored 2,077 points to 1,159 for Marty.
— Barry Atkinson’s most important contribution to Bona was his recommendation of Barry Mungar to Satalin.
