Ugh. Schmidt has to figure out a way to get playing time for his bench guys. I understand our starting five can ball, but we have seen some pretty good talent leave because of schmidts reliance on the starters. Gonna be hard to convince grad transfers to come this year when they see the playing time splits.

This one is not a surprise. My hope and belief is one of the walk-ons has earned a scholarship or someone like Brendon Adams now sees a path to joining SBU.

What happened on the bus/plane ride home? We have one of the best seasons in history of our school, with all the makings to repeat it next year, and our #6 and 7th player want to go somewhere else??? My two observations: - extending everyone another year under Covid is creating a ton of volatility - letting kids play after transferring is causing some of this. Yes, I get the point about coaches leaving, etc. But a former BB player who was interviewed on the radio (cant remember who) said he did not like it. 18-21 year old kids can make rash decisions (remember when we were that age), that may sound good at that moment, but maybe not in the long run if they thought about it longer. He liked the one year sit rule, because it made players realize how important their decision would be to their own life/development. I think Roberts may have stayed IF he had to sit a year and learn, get used to the new environment, etc. As the interviewed player pointed out, BB players can play on a dozen different AAU teams, maybe 2-4 HS, maybe prep school 16-20 different teams before going to college - college will just be seen as an extension of "I want what i want - now". So alot to be said for the one year rule.

I knew that Roberts left the school for the semester... is he officially in the transfer portal? Is there any chance that he could come back?

Again, one can partly blame Schmidt--maybe--but I was among the ones here who found him more a minus than a plus all year despite some claiming he was strong reserve and offered "spark." But as I pointed out, Schmidt never trusted--for good reason--so can't blame him much for not playing him more, except in blowouts.

As I just mentioned in the Shaw post ... the number of players in the portal is nearing or over 1000. Not sure how that compares to recent years but there are 350 D1 teams so that’s nearly 3 per team.
This is fueled by the Covid exception that give kids the immediate waiver and extra year. Players have nothing to lose and I would assume most of the time they improve their situation.
Good luck to AJ. He is a fearless gunslinger ... a bit wild but he had some great moments the last two seasons.

Weren't AJ and Winston friends? Aren't we after another AJ from Robert Morris? What if Schmidt is back channeling deals with former associates from Robert Morris to swap AJs? On a real note - Vasquez is going to move to a lower conference score a lot of points somewhere.

Sure, it's nice to keep your own, but this is a big opportunity for Coach Schmidt to bring in players that serve as better complements to the core 5. Assuming both Jaylen and Alejandro leave, we will have six open scholarships. Allows Schmidt to add a couple of strong complementary pieces for the short term while still trying to find some developmental talent for the long-term. Go Bonnies!

[quote source="/post/219615/thread" author=" bigcat" timestamp="1616616472" Assuming both Jaylen and Alejandro leave, we will have six open scholarships. Technically Bonnies have 6 scholarships, but honestly they have only 5. Schmidt always save 1 in his back pocket that he has never used. Geesh St. Joes gets more from their 13th scholarship than the Bonnies. At least they have a hawk flapping his wings.

Essentially, if you don’t start now - you transfer in college basketball. I notice that there is little discussion of the 1000 in the portal, or ours, how transferring will effect degree progress.

Doesn’t bode well for us, if they’re all transferring to start, why would they come here? This crap as usual is going to hurt non P5.

Given the prevalence of transferring among regular students, I’m not particularly concerned about the ability of athletes to finish degrees when transferring.

Transfers within the A10 had a 2 year "sit" rule, does anyone know if there are any changes to that.
