What’s the scoop on Rumpel? Is he a pg or sg? How has he looked in practice? I’m excited about this kid.

He is listed as a "combo guard" on a few media outlets but I think we can assume he is more of a PG. It appears he is more in favor of being named as point guard for the Bonnies and having that position. After going back and watching a lot of the highlights of his HS career through You Tube, he obviously has ball handling skills that have sustained him through the high school league he played in near the small city area of Binghamton, NY. He shows strong abilities to get to the hoop and scoring. He had games of 58 and 51 points at that time. In his videos for his AAU team, (City Roc), he still is able to drive to an extent but obviously with less success at the basket. His ability to find his teammates (who are obviously also better players in AAU) also improves. The one contest against another team, he has close to a triple double. (13, 12 and 9) He also shows some ability to hit the "3" ball, albeit, with a fairly slower release, as someone else pointed out earlier in this thread. Defensively, it seems the intensity is there to learn (again based on limited exposure of the highlights we see) which makes him more favorable to Coach Schmidt. Like Kyle, and like the "Iron Man 5", it depends on how hard the player is willing to work to improve themselves. Hopefully, Brett is of that ilk....

Brett is a shooting guard, with very good ball skills. He will be used at SG, next to Kyle, who will be back for year 5 !!!!

Just don't get your hopes up with him being a shooter. That's not his game. He's a slasher. Probably more similar to Quadry Adams than Jaylen Adams.
While he is a combo guard, I believe he will be seeing a lot of time at PG whenever Lofton leaves.

I believe you will all be very impressed with Brett's game on both ends of the floor. Lightning quick with good springs. He is a creator and a natural scorer. His stroke from 3 is sound - streaky is a good way to put it. I believe he will mesh well with any of the IRON 4 that may chose to return. We still need to pick-up a True Power forward type thru the Portal - IMO ...

chrismoses...You have consistently posted on many occasions that BRETT RUMPEL is not a trey shooter but a slasher. You may very well be correct. Time will tell. You seem very confident in your assessment. Wondering have you seen him play in person at Seton Catholic, Albany City Rocks, this past summer in the RC (as others have) or during season practices? Or just on some highlights? His videos show his ability to slash and finish with both hands against lesser talent. As a senior at Seton Catholic his 45.5 ppg, 53% FGs, 38% TREYS, 75% FTs, 4.9 assists, 11.3 rebs, 2.1 steals & 11 rebs. Those are eye popping #s that some may dismiss due to the talent level he was competing against. However when he played for Albany City Rocks against far higher talent he played very well & impressed Coach Tom Hart. The City Rocks video below shows he can hit deep treys (2 in first quarter), penetrate and finish, play dogged D, get rebounds with abandon, hit pull ups, be golden from the stripe, and display impressive playmaking skills. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfnE29Pkr9E 40+ pts www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0eWuQ-ZrKo 53 pts Corning www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5djljILytE Albany City Rocks, Tom hart I believe that BRETT's potential to be a fine trey threat is quite real. He spent this season learning the system and working on all aspects of his game. A gym rat with his skills spending endless hours shooting will result in a real threat from deep. BO2 probably knows more about BRETT than any poster on the Bandwagon. I remember him posting the following. "Complete gym rat, fits Schmidt’s style of wanting guys who will live in the gym getting shots up and improving your game." Doubts about his ability due to low level of HS competion is expected. Chuck posted the following addressing that concern. GT posted "DOM's HS played against low skill talent as did BRETT's. But his #s were much lower." Another good comparison is Joe Girard, who played in Class B at Glen Falls. Brett has far better stats. He is bigger, stronger and a much better athlete. Verbal Commits has Girard as a 4 star recruit (signed with Syracuse) while Verbal Commits has Brett with just 3 low major offers. By the way Girard has started 58 of 60 games and averages 11.2 ppg in his first 2 years at Syracuse. Brett Rumpel appears to be an extreme case of being over looked. I believe there is a lot more to BRETT's game than being a slasher. The Albany City Rock's video shows a multi skilled player. Cant wait to see him when given the chance

I am not sure which thread I'd find this information in, but an annual rite of fall, we hope for reports in the summer, is somebody on the board getting over to the Reilly Center and giving up there take. What I recall from this past year was a question about who our best shooter or shooters were. What stands out was that several observers had said that they thought that Brett had the best 3 shot on the team and wondered out loud if there was anyway that the Bonnies might reconsider and not red shirt him. In retrospect, I think it worked out best for both parties. I'm not saying that Brett couldn't have helped the Bonnies, but he got the chance to practice with the team, learn the system, get stronger and has, IMO a real chance to get playing time, if not start.
This is not related but I am hoping that we are able to bring some players in and really have some competition for playing time. We hdd hoped we had more of that this past season. As much as I'd be on board with whatever decision each one of the seniors decide upon. I will say that having two starting opportunities available or even three, wiould give us the best of both worlds, a couple of core guys and then guys like Evans, who I don't think is a four, at least not yet, but what do I really know, he's an outstanding player and like Rumpel, needs to be on the court. I likewise believe that if JNT puts in the work, he too will be in that group as well. In the case of Linton, first and foremost, getting him healthy and to fully participate. I contend that even if he had been able to get on the court that it takes junior college guys a year and we might have started seeing his ability if he had been able to play, towards the end of the year and to some extent, I think that learning curve is still out there for him. In Quadry's case, my initial take was Idris II, but while he's uber athletic there were times on the court when he didn't seem to make good decisions. Some of that maybe looking over your shoulder for that quick hook. In the Idris role, playing within the team scheme is critical. Given the fact that Quadry didn't seem to possess much in the way of an outside shot, he really has to work doubly hard and do all the other things well. I'm guessing we may bring in another proven scorer and also a power forward/center who can push for minutes as well. As for Mellouk and Duro, it's more of what we don't know. I love in the case of Evans and Mellouk, to be able to add a couple of 6'8" guys to our front court. I actually thought Duro, for not seeing the court all year and then having to play against VCU, did ok. That might have been an interesting game had we been able to make some of the lays we missed early on and then couldn't hit any shot for a while. By that time, it was more about trying to keep Duro and Karim from fouling out. I guess I'll go back to the notion that the staff has had a sit down with each of our players and let them know where they stand and what they need to do.
Bringing that back to Bret, while the highlight stuff is sometimes hard to read, he has so many positive aspects to his game, that I to am really excited to see what he can do. I truly believe that he and Evans can be two very important parts to next years group.

Rumpel can shoot, he's just not a catch & shoot type like Dom Welch or Matt Mobley, etc. He creates his own shot. We haven't had too many players like that, Marcus Posley comes to mind when I watch him play
But Posley was built like a rock. Rumpel will need to bulk up like him, fortunately that was exactly the plan for his redshirt season

Charlon Kloof meets Jaren Holmes is my best comparison for Brett. Whatever happens for him won’t be because he didn’t work hard enough. You don’t question his love of the game like you never did with Kyle Lofton.

After watching the city rocks video, it certainly looks like Brett has numerous skills that will fit very nicely with the Bonnies offensive system. He crashes the boards well, and immediately after grabbing a rebound, he turns upcourt with his head up looking to pass the ball to a teammate streaking up ahead and Brett gets the ball to the player leading the break. I think the Bonnies will always have that athletic forward heading upcourt looking for the lead pass, which Brett can get to him effectively. As far as his three point shot, his form is smooth and well-practiced and he is clearly comfortable from deep and in his free-throw shooting. His slashing ability should put him on the free throw line a ton in the A-10. Since most of his slashes are on angles instead of straight lines, I don’t see him getting called for offensive fouls too often. So obviously I am excited about his prospects, particularly since he’s had this year to learn the intricacies of the O, which I believe his skills are already a good fit for even without the red shirt seasoning year. Watch the video and you’ll conclude as I did, - what’s not to get excited about? ( yeah I know it’s a highlight video, but the skills are obvious and tantalizing).
