Tonight's attendance:3,748, think the V C U game was 3,900. YTD home season average is now 3,917. I think that is 6th highest in the A-10 (Dayton/VCU/Richmond/SLU/URI).

The usual in-game posters who love to attack our kids ad-nauseam with moronic negativity when we are behind never fail to make fools of themselves. I often wonder just how many times they were on the receiving end of "swirleys" during their time at SBU.

Sometimes I wonder if people know anything about basketball Assa was the leading rebounder in a game against the leagues top rebounding team Rebounding in the 2nd half was why we were able to come back and win that one. But yeah “where was he?” FG%: 38% 3-FG%: 30% FT%: 69% (29 total FT's for a starter playing the 4 - 29 total FT's after 22 games) 6.8 ppg Rebounding at 5.6 per game - very respectable and certainly comes up with some huge boards. He's behind a guard who's playing the 3 undersized by over 1 reb per game. Essentially Barry has the same avg. per game playing 7 less mins per game. But OK. I'm rooting for #2! Had expectations that he was THE difference maker this year that would take us up a level or two. That has not transpired. Still time left this season to make that impact. Go Bonas!

I was in school when we first joined the Eastern Eight and then A-10 in early 80s. Our crowds were always about 4,500 weekdays and 5,000-plus on weekends and maybe 1 of 2 sellouts. per season. I guess social media, cable and streaming services are keeping people home. Do the locals support the team like they used to? Chime in with any insight. #unfurl

Adams-Woods: “I have to cherish and enjoy every day and I love this place and these fans. That’s one thing I learned this year being here is that it’s just great to be a Bonnie.” Above quote from Mika should be shown to every recruit visiting Bona. Without a doubt, with Mika the Bonnies would have won the game against Duquesne (Bona lost by 4). His replacement Kyrell was 0-9 from the field and committed 4 turnovers with zero assists. gobonnies.com/sports/mens-basketball/stats/2023-24/duquesne/boxscore/6204

Most SBU fans don't live in Olean, so it'll always be harder to get great crowds during the week. The Orioles won 101 games last year and they draw flies during the week, but have strong crowds during the weekend. Mason, Joe's, VCU all have seen smaller crowds than usual the past couple of years. I remember Tim Kenney saying 50% of the season ticket holders lived 1+ hour from SBU's campus, which makes sense. There are fans, but a lot are busier during the week. Not sure it's anything we can control unless you want to play a couple of weekday games in Rochester every year, but even that is cost prohibitive with the new owners of Blue Cross Arena in DT ROC.

Just three games have had crowds over 4k - Canisius (4,850-full capacity), St Joe's (4,396), and Siena (4,022). These games were all on either a Saturday or Friday evening (SJU). The lowest attended game was Miami (3,433) on the Saturday after Thanksgiving with students away from campus. Keep in mind for average purposes that the capacity of the Reilly Center is no longer what it once was with modifications over the years. The official present capacity per the 2023-24 media guide is 4,850. Many years ago, the higher capacity allowed for some big games to have had larger crowds which helped bump up the average.

This Sat (Duq) should bring in a nice crowd. Saturday 2/17 (David) is alumni and 80s weekend and will be close to if not sold out. Tues 2/27 (Loyola) will be with students on break so that one could have low attendance. Saturday 3/9 (St Louis) has the students back and hopefully a full house to offer send offs to our seniors and Travis Ford.

Impression of the U-Mass game. — It was suppose to be a great matchup between Chad and Josh Cohen (UMass leading scorer). It turned out to be a no contest. Game started out with Josh defending Chad 1-on-1, but this was soon discarded as Frank Martin soon realized Cohen couldn’t defend Chad by himself. Chad outscored Cohen 15-4 (Cohen averages 16.3 ppg). Now if Chad can learn to pass out from double teams. — Noel had a solid game. UMass had 3 players at center position (Cohen, Hankins and Majok). Noel with a solid 3-4 from the field scored 8 points in 17 minutes of PT. The 3 players mentioned above scored a total of 9 points in 42 minutes of PT. Chad and Noel dominated this game both offensively and defensively. They also out rebounded them 9-7. — Mika needs to return back to playing 35 minutes a game. Big difference with him on the bench. When Mika picked up his 3rd foul he pleaded with Schmidt not to bench him saying he wasn’t going to get another foul. Mika was right he didn’t get another foul in the game. Mika’s replacement had Daryl playing 8 minutes at the point and Kyrell with 2 minutes. They combined for 3 points (1-5 from the field) 2 assists and 1 turnover. Mika has a +6 when he was on the court. Daryl had +1 and Kyrell -4. — Moses hit some really big 3s, while the Bonnies were struggling offensively. Scored 14 points with a solid 4-9 from the field. Moses slam of a shot bouncing high off the rim was special. He led Bona with a +11 when he was on the court. — Chuck was the obvious MVP of this game scoring 19 points on a very impressive 8-11 from the field. Chuck is the Bonnies most effective player in taking the ball to the basket (Mika is a close 2nd). Chuck taking the ball to the basket was the biggest factor in the Bonnies win. Big stat from this game is Bona winning second chance points 15-12. Very impressive when you consider UMass thrive on 2nd chance points as they are 1st in A-10 in offensive rebounds. Second chance points is a stat the Bonnies have been winning lately. gobonnies.com/documents/2024/2/7/2345680.PDF

Sip let's not forget demographics. Over the last 10 years a lot of the Bonas faithful are now across the street.
With that being said the Southern States are full of Bonnie fans. The GREATEST away game I have ever attended was the Pepperdine Tournament in California. We just dominated the place.

Sometimes I wonder if people know anything about basketball Assa was the leading rebounder in a game against the leagues top rebounding team Rebounding in the 2nd half was why we were able to come back and win that one. But yeah “where was he?” He had a big offensive rebound late in the second half, too. But I think like others, I view his season as a pretty big disappointment thus far. His 3PT% is now under 30%. Assa’s progression has been slow and his role on offense is lesser than last year. What bothers me is his lack of fundamentals on defense. He is off balance. He has trouble fighting off bigger guys like Cross in the post. He really is not a 4. Adaway was a smaller 4 but he was built like a linebacker and is much stronger than Assa. If rebounding is his strong point then Barry makes more sense than Assa since he grabs twice as many boards per 40 minutes and provides more steals and energy. I like Assa but would rather see him as a shooter off the bench with Banks. Barry is the real deal. We won’t see his total value until he plays at least 25+ minutes a game.
