SBUNFURLED is reporting NOAH BOLANGA's waiver WAS approved! Huge news! I wish I could give Sipo more than one thumb up. Above is worth several thumbs up. Agree with Sipo "huge news"." Let us just hope Noah is eligible immediately. With Noah the Bonnies are going to be a big surprise in the A-10. Following is from Unfurl. Freshman wing Noah Bolanga's waiver has been approved, I'm told. The 6-8 Frenchman averaged 6 pts on 36% from 3 in France's Pro B League. Bolanga is a polished, athletic lefty with a nice jumper. Very good and unexpected late offseason news. x.com/SBUnfurled?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

I just watched a highlight tape of Bolanga from the 2023 FIBA Under 20 championships. I think he's going to be a big fan favorite. He reminds me of Greg Sanders. He's got the long smooth lefty jumper. He has a great handle for a 6:8 kid. And he's got that Sanders flair and confidence about him. Can't wait to see him play.

The G-Man was a smooth lefty; great guy. I met him in Washington, DC a few years back. I shook his hand and then switched to the left and proclaimed I'm shaking the all-time Bonas leading scorer's hand. He got a charge out of it. Welcome, Noah, to the Good Journey. Can't wait to see you play.

The first thing you are going to notice about Noah is how skinny he is. He is the skinniest Bonnie player I can think of. At 6’8” 180 pounds (from Go Bonnies) he is 1 inch shorter and 20 pounds lighter than Glenn Price, who was known as “slim.” Best word I’ve seen describing Noah’s game is from Unfurl, with “versatility.” Everyone knows Noah has a great shot, but his versatility surprised me. He is more than just a shooter. I was not expecting to see his impressive play making skills. He sets many of his teammates with solid shots. I’ve already posted about Noah blowing by Duane with a beautiful cross over and driving down the sidelines with Noel waiting for him, he passes it to the other corner for a wide open 3 for Miles, which he drills. I’m trying to think of a small forward, who was both a great shooter and play maker. Best I can think of is 6’4” Mike Sheehey. As a senior Sheehey was the teams 2nd leading scorer (13.4 ppg) and 3rd in assists (99) which is 72 more assists than player, who was next in assists. I can see the same occurring this season with Dasonte, Melvin and Noah being way ahead of rest of the team in assists. This team has 3 solid play makers on the team. www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pricegl01.htmlwww.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/1984.html

Chuck, now that the fellas are a few weeks into practice, are there any recent observations you can share? I am curious about so many of these new guys and have some fit in well to Schmidt's tactics or some still finding their way?

Does the waiver mean he can redshirt with 2 years or immediately play?

I am curious about so many of these new guys and have some fit in well to Schmidt's tactics or some still finding their way? Prior to Alfred game, I'll be giving my final observations. Hoping to watch a couple more practices. My way too early starting 5 is Noel, Lajae, Chance, Melvin and Dasaonte. If Noah is eligible I'm placing him in the starting lineup. I think Bonnies have a solid starting 5, especially with Noah. Hoping Noah is eligible for 1st game.

I was just about to ask for some predictions for the starting 5 and rotation. Tough to do since we haven’t seen most of these guys in the brown and white yet. Even with a deeper bench Schmidt will rarely play more than 8 guys so some will be on the outside looking in. Noah’s eligibility brings even more intrigue to the lineup. My beat guess… - Bowen - Council - C. moore - L. Jones - Noel Brown
Bench Noah Floarin Hinton Jaxson/ Duane
Outside looking in Miles Rose Xander Wedlow Kaba
Every year I’m so intrigued by this, especially when we’re really don’t know a ton of these guys. Maybe I’m underrating the guys who have been in our system (Duane/Miles). Time will tell.
Also very curious to see the time split between the 3/4 especially with Noah eligible now. Chance/ Jaxson/ Duane/ Lajae/ Kaba/ Noah/ even Council. Wondering what everyone else’s predictions are!?
Looking forward to a great season!

Matty Ice, although my opinion is uninformed, it is the same as yours. My only add is I think Hinton might be a little more outside looking in. Mark usually (caveat is that I’m stressing the word usually) leans on his two main guards to play a ton of minutes. I think Bowen and Council are the two known commodities. I think they’re going to play 30+ each, possibly more. I have no evidence to tell you why but I think Edwards is too good to not get minutes somewhere. There’s a glut of wings now, so his minutes will be limited there. My best guess below. And the big question seems to be, who’s playing the 3-4 out of — what appears to be — 5 good options (Chance Moore, Lajae Jones, Noah Bolanga, Duane Thompson and Jaxon Edwards). Only 80 minutes to go around there. C: Noel (30-35), Folarin (5-10) PF: Moore (20-30), Lajae (5-10), Thompson (5-10) SF: Lajae (20-30), (Bolanga 15-20), Edwards (5-10) SG: Council (30-35), Edwards (5-10) PG: Bowen (30-35), Hinton (5-10)

Bolanga looks really quick and smooth in the video. It will be interesting to see how minutes get distributed between the 2/3/4 positions. Noel and Bowen will probably log the most minutes. I have a feeling that Miles Roses stuck around for a reason. They have to find time for Duane and Kaba in order to keep them happy. I think we finish better than 10th b/c I have heard these guys play 100% and play tough defense. Hustling part of the game. Davidson last year at home was a way less athletic team but they hustled and played hard and stayed in the game. Defense and scrappiness goes along way in college hoops. I feel like Mika/Pride/Yann weren't really stingy defenders. Barry Evans was scrappy and played good Defense. A scrappy athletic team could do well in the Atlantic 10. Let's Goooooo!

Does the waiver mean he can redshirt with 2 years or immediately play? According to SBUnfurled (in the replies), he is eligible immediately and has at least 2 years.

With a complete roster rebuild it probably will take the staff several scrimmages and games to get comfortable with players — and vice versa.
I believe the scrimmage at Kent State is next weekend. Then you have Alfred and Cal State Northridge who are normally bottom-feeders in the Big West. Last year they finished middle of the pack.
Kent State will be the class of the MAC this season along with Akron. The Flashes have several key returning players and solid additions. That will be a great barometer for Schmidt.
Maybe he plays 10-11 guys for a few weeks before finding his 8 to 9 guys.
