Great points, coach. Some fans seem to forget that you can only play 5 guys at a time (new rule this season 🫤) … and that a coach has 200 minutes of playing time to divvy each game. Noah might not be in the mix yet.
Schmidt’s best players normally are on the court for 35 mpg or more. He likes his PG1 to play 36, 38 or even 40 minutes as Lofton did often.
Talent wins games and not necessarily depth, is how Bonas’ best teams have rolled the last 7 to 8 years. Plus, if you have 10 new guys in the program how are your best 3 or 4 or 5 players going to learn/gel/grow if they are not on the court together most of the game?
One of the problems I had with last year is that I can’t even pinpoint our best player, even now. Our most valuable. Our 38 mpg guys.
Was it Chad? How about Daryl Banks? Was it Mika? Chuck Pride? Many thought it would be Assa?
It was a strange gang. No one was consistent and the stand-up guy who would be the general/leader/killer every game … be our best player(s) on the court … such as Lofton, Adams, Mobley, Posley, Stockard, Adaway, etc. we’re always to be counted on.
That level of talent plus leadership has been missing since the Iron Man 2.0 group transferred out of Dodge.
I’m betting that Schmidt sees Council, Brown, Bowen, Moore and Jones as tougher kids like the Lofton-Adaway-Holmes bunch. Noah could be a big piece at some point but it’s going to take some time for him and the entire group to develop.

Defense! It will all be about defense. And who learns Schmidt's system.
All our conjecture is ignorant of those two things.

In response to Boston's list of players, I quote John Blutarsky from Animal House
"Seven years of college down the drain"
or at least that is how long some of them seem to have been around

Curious about the timing of Vodorr’s statement “it will all be about defense. And who learns Schmidt's system,” and especially with it being in regards to Noah.
Prior to attending practice this week, I thought Noah was a slam dunk choice as a starter. I was stunned to see Noah spending a lot of time on the sidelines watching with Kaba and Xander. Noah was healthy as he participated and he ran sprints with rest of the team. With his limited time on the court I thought Noah looked good displaying one of the best shots on the team. It just doesn’t make sense with a healthy Noah standing and watching. In the last pickup games I stated “Noah was the star for team 2. Without a doubt the leading scorer for his team. His ability to create surprised me. Had the best move of the day.” He is clearly the most athletic player on a very athletic team and even Woj just stated “Noah is an outstanding young man and player -- and one of the top international newcomers in the at Draft Express on ESPN.” ESPN’s Draft Express has Noah as one of the top 23 first year newcomers in college basketball. It is difficult to imagine Noah sitting at the end of the bench with Kaba and Xander.
All I can figure is Schmidt is not happy with his defense or Noah is having trouble learning Schmidt’s legendary thick play book or maybe a combination of both.
Some positive news from practice. — Team shot very well. Biggest improvement was Dasonte, who displayed a solid shot, which included 3 pointers. — Lajae was extremely hot with his jump shot. He couldn’t miss. — Chance looked really good. Appears to be the starting small forward. — Mike displaying some back to the basket moves on the low blocks and this was with Noel defending him.
Starters appear to be Noel, Lajae, Chance, Melvin and Dasonte.

Chuck - If NOAH is indeed the player that we all believe him to be (including WOJ & ESPN "Draft Express" writers), then it will be just a matter of time for him to earn his spot. To instantly insert him into the first 5 would be a slap in the face to the guys that have been together and working hard since the summer. I could see that potentially causing division in the ranks among the players. We don't need that crap going on again this year. If he is the type of player we want and need - he will keep his head down and work his butt off to earn a starting spot. If nothing else, it should make for much more spirited and intense practices - where true character is revealed.
It's all good - I believe coach knows exactly what he's doing (unlike Aaron Boone - but that's for another thread - UGH) ...
LETS GO BONAS

BONA82.5: The NY shortstop tried to scoop a throw from the outfield and the ball got away for an error. His fundamentals were weak. His error allowed the runner to move a base and the runner scored on a fly ball. Bona's player John McGraw would have been all over the shortstop for the mental error. McGraw never criticized mechanical errors, but would be all over you for lack of fundamentals. Don't blame Aaron Boone.

Was not VOLPE, it was second baseman TORRES who has been lazy with his defense all year.

That's even worse. On a long hit to right, the second baseman is supposed to go to short right in case a relay is needed and to line up with second base. The shortstop should cover second. The NY second baseman was less than stellar on a few other plays. He needs to make up for it in the next game.

Despite making the World Series, the Yankees' fielding and base running have been head scratching at times.

Thanks SIP - You beat me to it. Torres (2B) should have been on the bag and he was 6 feet off it, then he failed to block the throw from SOTO. Boone is just too much analytics - no gut feel for the game. 1ST : He pulls Cole after 88 pitches - Quote from D. Jeter (remember him ?) : "Gerrit Cole was dominating this game. He was dominating the game. And if you take him out after 88 pitches for I don’t know what reason, it’s a domino effect on not only this game tonight, tomorrow’s game and the rest of this series. I just think when you have someone that’s dealing like Gerrit Cole was dealing tonight, you leave him out there as long as you can." Who does he put in ? HOLMES - really The guy is a mess ... Incredibly fortunate that didn't lose it for them right there ... Then - Going with Cortes having not pitched in over a month (HILL was the choice there - no brainer) and getting crazy lucky with Ohtani popping out. Walking Betts to load em up was stupid too. At least if you are going to leave NESTOR in - let him pitch to BETTS but don't give him anything to hit - maybe get him to chase one out of the zone. At a minimum he gets to throw a few pitches with no pressure to throw strikes. BOONE loads them up and he has to throw strikes - ala grooving one to Freeman on the 1st pitch - GAME OVER. Furthermore - Why not leave Weaver in to start the 10th - he was dealing too (Oh Yeah - Analytics says you have to take closer out after 5 outs max)... The guy just makes poor decisions over and over. As one NY Sports writer stated - "The biggest obstacle to the Yankees winning the World Series is BOONE."

I'll trust Coach on this one. If NOAH's the better player - he will be a starter / finisher. Let's give him a few practices to prove it and earn the job first. Not just to the coaches - but to his teammates as well. It's all good agoo ...
