b4life- I am told that the PG's listed above are all better than Newell. His game is described as a level below the A-10. That is all that I know. I don't believe we are still recruiting him.

How about Jabs Newby a 6'1" PG, who averaged 13 ppg for one of the top basketball programs in the country. Mountain State Academy's entire starting lineup is being recruited or signed by BCS schools (link below): Noah Coattrill - 10th rated PG by Rivals signed with West Virginia. Vandeer Joaquim - 12th rated center by Scout signed with Nebraska. Deniz Kilicli, a 6-9 power forward, rated No. 14 by ESPN signed with West Virginia. Kofi Mensa, a 6-4 guard, being recruited by WVU, Marshall, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. The best part is Jabs Newby lists the Bonnies as one of the 4 schools "sticking out." “Nebraska, Baylor, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Marshall, St. Joe’s, St. Bonaventure, Miami-Ohio, Fresno State, Duquense, Colorado and Western Carolina,” were schools mentioned by Newby as currently recruiting him. At this point, he indicated that “Nebraska, Baylor, St. Bonaventure [and] Marshall” are “sticking out” in the process. Following is an article on Jabs Newby with link below. From North of the Border to Mountain State Academy to the high-major radar A player to keep an eye on this spring and summer AAU season is 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard Jabs Newby, a current junior at Mountain State Academy in Berkley (WV). Newby came to Mountain State in the middle of last year from his native home of Toronto, Canada. North of the border, Newby attended St. Marguerite D’Youville High School and played AAU ball with M33M Canada. Now, playing at a burgeoning program on the national scene and with the newly formed Team Takeover (Canada), Newby will get plenty of opportunity to showcase and improve his skills. “The best part of my experience at Mountain State is playing basketball against other ranked high school teams in America,” said Newby. “Also, learning more to become a true point guard.” The season has had its up and downs for Mountain State, but they have been learning to come together and play as a team. West Virginia commits Deniz Kilicli (2009) and Noah Cottrill (2010), along with Newby, highly regarded 2010 small forward prospect Shaquille Thomas and 2009 Nebraska commit Vander Joaquim are just some of the players that comprise the talented roster his season for the Falcons and coach Rob Fulford. “This season is fun for me,” Newby said. “I got to learn more how to play both the point guard and shooting guard positions.” “For the team, I think [we] clicked together as one and learned how to play together to win key games. We all work hard everyday at practice to be ready for the games.” On the year, Newby has averaged approximately 13 points a game along with four rebounds and assists. While no Big East schools were listed by Newby, he has seen quite a bit of interest from schools out of the Big 12 and other high-major conferences. “Nebraska, Baylor, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Marshall, St. It would not come as a big surprise to us if Newby’s list becomes longer before it becomes shorter. In the recent 2009 Primetime Shootout, Newby showed off his quick handle and threw down an athletic dunk in transition. When it is time to make a decision, he does have some pre-determined criteria that will factor into the choice. “A place where I can call ‘home’, a place that’s dedicated to win a NCAA championship, great coaching staff and players, [and] also great in academics so I can earn a diploma,” Newby said. Keep an eye on Jabs Newby, he just might be a major breakout performer during the upcoming travel season. www.irontontribune.com/news/2008/dec/18/prep-power-mountain-state-faces-red-devils-marquee/w3.nbebasketball.com/2009/03/08/class-of-2010-intro-jabs-newby/

Keep a look out for a kid at CBA in Albany next year Senior Kameron RItter. He is a 6'3" or so (and growing) guard who has a wing span of a condor. Handles the rock, goes to the hole, and is getting ever better shooting the "3". Most impressive to me is his defense. Because of his length and agressiveness, he always gets the assignment of playing the other teams best player if they are a 1,2,3 or 4. He is avery good defender, can run and is a great kid. I know he's been tracked by places like Stanford, ODU, George Mason and the Ivy's as well.

Completely off topic and not saying anything about the Ritter kid because it's the first I've heard his name, but I see Stanford listed with some questionable players the last couple of years. Again, no offense to Ritter, but what is a Pac-10 school with a high academic reputation doing listed with ODU, GM, and the Ivy's? They were rumored to have offered Kyle Randall out of Kennedy Catholic last year, a player who eventually signed with UNC-Greensboro.

Re: Kameron Ritter: You're correct when you say that Stanford is considered a great academic school as are the Ivy league schools. It was to illuminate the fact that this kid has got the academic skills as well as the bball abilities.

sony - as I said, that wasn't directed towards Ritter at all...just a comment on the strange group of schools that I always see Stanford competing against....

I'm hearing we are deeply involved with a very special SF, 6'6-205 Canadian, who is playing at a U.S. Prep. Staff wants this one quiet, but this kid is a keeper and has 4 year starter in the A-10 written all over him. Excuse the vagueness, but that is the way it needs to be on this one.

When Calvin Newell was putting up prolific scoring #s, many on this board were high on getting him. Indeed it was reported that he was offered by Bona, UMass, Fairfield, UNC Charlotte & Robert Morris. Eric "Pooh" Evans (Chester HS Star) has mentored him in his Fidonce player development program. I heard from "Pooh" 5 weeks ago & he told me that Calvin was still looking at colleges. bjif's assessment is pretty much on the mark.

Melvin Ejim- Canadian stud. 6'6-205 @ Brewster Academy. ESPN recruiting service ranks him a 93 off his junior year performance. He is called by them" an absolute nightmare for opposing defenses". Quick, strong, leaper who can finish are all descriptive comments they use.Has a complete all around game. Competition will be tough , as usual, BC, Providence from Big East and Iowa State more than interested. We will need a Nicholson type signing here. Beauty of it is he could start for us nearly in his back yard and give his family the opportunity to watch him play often. This kid is a difference maker!

I love the recruiting threads:
A few comments about some guys listed, Khalil Murphy-despite the reports that he is pretty solid acadmically he is short on his SAT, I do agree that he has given the impression that he is a high major but some of it may not be his fault, this is from ESPN "April, 2008: He's a smooth athletic wing player who has honed his guard skills and has now caught the attention of high major programs. Can shoot it well to 21 feet and also has a decent mid-range game. One of the best kept secrets on the East Coast, he'll be a High-Major starter by his junior Season.", kids read this and it blows up their heads.
Will Adams-signed with Towson but is not enrolling this year, he is battling Hodgkins Disease and hopefully everything works out for him. I am thinking he will stay close to Philly.
Frantz Massenat-Becuase he is solid academically I can see major competition for him.
Tre Bowman-Small school player, from a small basketball area who blew up this spring. I saw him dominate his local area last year, and told some schools to jump in. I think A10/CAA is perfect for him at this point. Having played in a smaller area and dominated has blown up his head somewhat.
Calvin Newell-His handlers want him to go big time and I just don't see it. I saw him twice last year and thought he was a NEC/America East kid and I'm not sure a year of prep is going to change that.
Myron Respress-I have heard that he is going to leave HS, get his GED, and enroll at a big time Junior College. He has pretty much no chance of qualifying after HS/prep.
Kameron Ritter reminds me of Kevon Moore-who just transferred from UNC Wilmington to Niagara.

In order to win at some point Schmidt is going to have to land a player he has no right to land - What propelled our NCAA run was baron and asst coach Rob lanier convincing Timmy Winn to attend St Bonas....4 yrs later we were in double OT to KY in the NCAA,,,,, Schmidt has done a great job lifting us out of Solomon's mess....now we need that next jump......give us a special player with the A10 core he has built....its time....regardless of position...my bet is it will come out of Canada.... and whoever is the local Olean guys who feed baron and/or Pat Clarke...stop it F--- off !!! we are sick of it .....its obvious now that it happens...the URI staff uses SBU as an extra recruiter and then bad mouths SBU in the process of trying to land the recruit....we know for a fact Baron was thrown out of a house this past year by a mom of a recruit because baron was Negative recruiting against SBU........ yes it causes mixed feeling to then this summer to welcome Baron into SBU's hof.... I hate to post such things but Baron & Clarke have pushed it to this point.....make no bones about it...they bad mouth SBU to any recuit who will listen.....

As for the top half of the post, that's already happened, and, yes, our pivotal player hails from Canada. His name is Andrew Nicholson. Sure, it would be great - maybe even necessary - to land a Jabs Newby or Melvin Ejim, but who's to say we don't already have big time players in Simmons and/or Conger? As for the Rhode Island staff eavesdropping around Bona circles, how hard is it to really find out who's recruiting whom? Especially in basketball circles, I figure that's relatively common knowledge. However, their rosters for the last several years have been chock full of former Bona recruits (James, Ulmer, Martel, . That's one thing - we are in the same league, after all - but URI coming in at the 11th hour on an unheralded, D II recruit, Bona forward Jake Houseknecht, was sort of peculiar. For what it's worth, I was talking basketball over a beer with Jimbo & Clarke at a wedding a year ago this month when I dropped the name of a certain recruit. "What do you know about Kim English!," the head coach exclaimed. Clarke and I chuckled, and off an angered Baron stormed. According to those on here, it sounds like that's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
