LumsdnA10Academc93-Two relevant points not to overlook.
Add Horace McCloster as the most recent example of a Bona Recruit that my former friend at URI has tried to coat-tail onto at the 11th hour. As JH stated, and you yourself, it is becoming far more than just a coincidence. It is also exactly why our staff has become very tight lipped on potential recruits. Can you blame them?
Secondly, none of us should make the mistake of thinking Andrew Nicholson can do it by himself. Even the "Big Cat" had Billy the Kid, Matt Gantt and John Hayes around him. Bona's legendary weakness has always been no depth. Look at our history from Fred Crawford, to George Carter, to Glenn Price to Earl Belcher. These were all very good players who could have used a strong supporting cast. To win consistently, you can't be one and done. Depth is critical and this is the exact formula that Xavier has used over the past ten years. I think Schmidt has learned his lesson well there, and is importing that to us. It is clearly why both Newby, Ejim,Carter or Green are all necessary gets. They will make Andrew the All American he has the "Potential" to become.

The comments about the staff being type lipped on recruits is so true. The Baron/Clarke cloud still hangs over the head of the staff when it comes to talking about recruiting. Of course coaches are aware of what others are doing to some degree but dont any of you be naive enough to believe that there are some individuals that still stay in contact with Clarke about what we are doing and who we are looking at. Most of the talk about the true recruiting travels and players we are looking at is done off the bandwagon. To me it is a credit to Schmidt and his staff that the RI coaches are "curiously" watching what we do. It shows we are looking at legit kids.

Just learned yesterday that Bona Florida target Will Sheehey ,has blown up big time. Many folks down here believe him to now be top 5 in the state. Obviously, the array of schools looking for his services is expanding daily. A large part of this is the fact that the kid has a really good offensive game ,but he also plays tenacious D on the other side of the ball. This is a very complete player, one of the best in a long line of terrific Florida athletes.

Plays on the same AAU team as major 7' prospect Fab Melo. Offers from us, Northeastern, St. Bonaventure (where his father, Mike, starred), but starting to get higher interest. 80's UVA player Tom Sheehey (McD's AA, 4 year starter) is his uncle. Sounds like the kid has got a great above the rim game, would be another great sleeper for us, and help round out a super class.... #33 in video, solid prospect.....with a strong two hand slam to close at the end: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gl2m-_WvbkLast edited by TribeHeart on July 22, 2009, 01:56:29 AM, edited 1 time in total.

"In order to win at some point Schmidt is going to have to land a player he has no right to land - What propelled our NCAA run was baron and asst coach Rob lanier convincing Timmy Winn to attend St Bonas....4 yrs later we were in double OT to KY in the NCAA,,,,, Schmidt has done a great job lifting us out of Solomon's mess....now we need that next jump......give us a special player with the A10 core he has built....its time....regardless of position...my bet is it will come out of Canada...." I think you're right. His name his Andrew Nicholson. In case it was taken the wrong way - I think Schmidt has done a great job and landed a recruit better than expected in Andrew. That allowed us to break from single digits to 15 wins which is perhaps the most difficult jump to make. My point is that we now need to make the next jump and that is 15 wins to postseason and that means landing another to push us there. Andrew like any top player cannot do it alone. Also for those critics on the Horace Mc signing - word is he may be the best player on campus now !!!

Horace would be starting if eligible. He is not the best player on the team, but the best guy for the 4 spot. A definite upgrade in the paint. Plays a smart, controlled game, and has decent range with his jumper.

Just to add to the quest for improved recruiting , Demetrius Conger graded out to be an 84 last year. Not that these gradings mean a hell of alot until the kid actually performs in Division 1, but several of this years targets are significantly higher.
Elijah Pittman grades an 87, Kyle Marshall at 91, Tyreek Duren at 92, and Melvin Ejim at a 93.
What this shows in my opinion is the ratcheting up of quality targets.

Shaq Duncan '10, Frankford (PA), Team NJABC:
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 190 Position: C, PF Year: Class of 2010 AAU Team: Team Phenom/Team NJABC High School: Frankford HS (Philadelphia, PA)
Drexel, Robert Morris, LSU, Fairfield, George Mason, Arkansas- LittleRock, Quinnipiac, Nebraska, Siena,St. Francis (NY), Temple, La Salle,Virginia Tech, UConn, Florida, St. Peter's,Memphis, Providence,Niagara, St. Bonaventure, Virginia Commonwealth, St.John's, and Iona Offers: Drexel, Robert Morris, Fairfield, George Mason, Nebraska, St. Francis(NY),Temple, La Salle, St. Bonaventure, Virginia Commonwealth, and Iona
Favorites: "I'm wide open."
Notes-Duncan said that he is considering doing a post-grad year upon completing high school, which he would do at TAG Academy (FL). Why is that? "Because when I go to school I don't want to waste their time. I want to come in and contribute. . . . work on my game." The reason that TAG Academy is the choice is because of his relationship with the father LaSalle-bound Parish Grant '09, who suggested it to Duncan.
Shaq Duncan (2010, 6-8 PF)
Hoop Group Elite Camp: Shaq strung together a very fine outing. Guarded by a slow footed seven footer, Shaq took full advantage. He used his agility to get by his man and finish around the rim. He's fluid and adjusts well in traffic even when the help defense got there or his man tried to recover. He went to the opposite side of the hoop time and time again. Shaq handles the ball well and used short and quick drives. He ran the floor well too. He rarely took any jumpers and didn't post up much. He found what was working and stuck to it.

Elijah Pittman grades an 87, Kyle Marshall at 91, Tyreek Duren at 92, and Melvin Ejim at a 93. What this shows in my opinion is the ratcheting up of quality targets. has he been mentioned here before? he is a 4-star Rivals/ 3-star Scout.com player Khyle Marshall | SF Hometown Ft. Lauderdale, FL High School Flanagan High School Position rank Small Forward # 26 Height 6'6" Weight 200 lbs. Scouts Grade 91 Considering: Miami Florida State Penn State Auburn Butler South Carolina Kansas State Houston Evaluation May, 2009: Marshall was in full attack mode on every catch. He has a great motor and is aggressive on both ends of the floor. He competes for rebounds and is very quick to the ball. Marshall runs the floor in transition and is an above the rim finisher in traffic. This wiry strong lefty can also get to the rim with quick first step slashes and can score with athletic moves over or around defenders. Marshall can float and hang in the air and does a good job of drawing fouls. He also loves to attack the basket along the baseline where he extends with his great length to finish with ease. Marshall will use the spin move when he wants to get to the rim from the high post area as well. He has great body control as spins off defenders to score in the middle of the lane. The three point shot was also falling today with time and space but his jumper is an area that he must work on to be more consistent. He has the length and athletic ability to defend all three perimeter positions in a switch situation. The young wing is very versatile and will be a treat to watch develop this summer. April, 2009: Slashes to the rim in transition as well as in the half court, offensive glass tip ins and constant activity on both ends is the best way to describe this long and athletic forward. Marshall is a lefty that has excellent hang time when he elevates in the lane and finishes over taller defenders. He is a chore to box out because he sprints to the boards from where ever he is on the floor when the shot is released. Marshall pursues the ball on both ends with great urgency. He also scores with a nice mid range pull up jumper with a high release and good follow through. He must work to extend his shooting range to take his offensive game to the next level. On defense he can defend both wing positions and maybe an undersized power forward. Marshall is a treat to watch because he plays with great energy. Staff has made a smart move developing early relationship with Shawn Valentine. He has an 85 rating as a junior, which is excellent. The list of schools will certainly grow later on, so it is always good to be in early and establish a long relationship with the kid, his family, and AAU people.
Something else that I noticed, and I don't know what is going on, but LaSalle has offered close to 50kids!! Every time I read an article, La Salle has offered. I don't know if this strategy is to throw it against the wall and we will see what sticks, or does Dr G have a plan? I would think that word is going to get out, and kids may not take their interest seriously. It did work in getting A. Murray the number #35 kid in the country and a certain impact player into the A-10.

sounds like we were pretty active in this period..... here is an interesting entry from the fox sports recruiting blog: community.foxsports.com/goodmanonfox/blog/IRONMAN COACHES? WHICH GUYS DIDN'T TAKE A BREAKThursday, July 30, 2009, 04:36 PM EST [General] Tomorrow is the final day of the July recruiting period - in which coaches are allowed to go out and see recruits for 20 total days. Xavier head coach Chris Mack said he was out 18 of the 20. UConn's Jim Calhoun went out with eight broken ribs and was on the road for the better part of the 20 days. Not even Scout.com's Dave Telep was out all 20 days. Please e-mail me at jngoodman@aol.com if you or your head coach was out the entire 20 days in the period.

Keegan Hyland | SG Hometown Portland, ME High School South Portland High School Position rank Shooting Guard # 124 Height 6'4"
Scouts Grade: 82
Evaluation
May, 2009: Hyland's best asset is his shot making. He's super consistent behind the three-point line whether spotting up or coming off screens and just as consistent pulling up off the dribble. He has a much quicker release going left versus right, and can also get to the rim with a deceptively quick first step when being overplayed. He has a strong overall floor game as he moves with purpose away from the ball and is also a terrific passer. He needs to get much stronger, especially in his upper body, so that he can handle the rigors of college basketball and improve his ability to finish at the rim. His lack of strength and only mediocre athleticism can also limit him defensively.
