We have Noah, who has decided to leave professional basketball to earn a college degree. Isn’t this what we encourage many young basketball players to do. Now the NCAA is basically punishing Noah for his decision and forcing him to sit out a year from the game he loves and even worse he will not be allowed to play basketball in his last 2 years of college.

Does this make common sense to anyone? It seems NCAA clearing house should be encouraging a young person for making a good decision by wanting to earn a bachelor degree, instead of forcing him to make difficult decisions.

If he was going to Duke, North Carolina or some others, the NCAA would have added years so he could play 6.

How is he not an incoming freshman with four years of eligibility? As an incoming freshman he does not need any prior college credits.

Believe me if he was going to a Power 5 payola school like UNC or Duke or UK he would have eligible from day one.

And why in the name of heaven is SBU on hook for one million dollars in payments for the federal NCAA athletes pay case?

We, as a mid major school had nothing to do with this corrupt settlement, and can and will not pay salaries to athletes, and should by all rights not have to pay one single dime.

Athletes are already hugely compensated with free tuition, free room and board, free clothing, and monthly stipends. Compensation enough! This package is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to athletes and gives them the opportunity to have a life career, separate and apart from any pro sports false fantasy.....

Because despite the benefits of a scholarship, the NCAA and schools were making alot of $ from the athletes. So now they have to share. That is the free market. It has been an unfair system to athletes for decades. There are currently some bumps in the road for schools and athletes, but no one is going backwards (unless you want to drop to D3).

What we need, and I am looking for the OTH to take the lead on this, is detailed research into and reporting on, the process of a foreign recruit becoming eligible to play in the US, first from the immigration rules, then to getting the NCAA approval to play college sports, based on my presumption that the immigration issues need to be dealt with first, as you need to get an OK to get into the country before getting to what you can do once here. I hope that Chiuck’s thinking stated above is correct and that there is a presumption in favor of allowing into the country young people looking to obtain an education here, and that the NCAA would start with that same attitude. But first, I think we need reporting on what the process is for both organizations. The need for this is that based on some of the statements made about Woj’s impact that referenced his potential influence in attracting foreign recruits probably means we’ll see this more often, if not regularly, so understanding the process would help. So how about it, JP, time for some research and a feature story?

Not to be a total pessimist, but I guess I’m surprised this kid would be willing to come here and redshirt. I love Bona, but I’m not entirely sure it’s the best place for a 21-year-old from France who has to sit out a year. I don’t know, I guess I’m a skeptic. Can we really keep him in Olean for 12 months without playing a game? Doesn’t seem to vibe with today’s generation, let alone a kid who was playing professionally for the last two years. Hoping he’s eligible sooner than later.
