I took a peak at their roster. They have a bunch of guys listed as forwards in the 6’6” to 6’8” range but no true big, but I didn’t get into more details, like the number of new players versus returning players and obviously there are no season stats or game trends to look at. Last year they were 19-15, including 9-7 on the road with a win against UCLA at Pauley. Without going into details, they look to be willing to go on the road against quality teams. Hopefully the atmosphere in the RC will present something they haven’t seen, but if they can win at Pauley, they could present us with some mental toughness.

CSUN is no joke - Brand new roster very similar to ours :
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior forward Keonte Jones was one of six selected to the 2024-25 All-Big West All-Big West Preseason Team while CSUN was picked to finish sixth in the Preseason Coaches' Poll on Tuesday as announced by the league office. Keonte Jones All-Big West Preseason Originally from Madison, Wis., Jones returns to CSUN for his second season after leading the Matadors in rebounds per game (6.9), blocks per game (1.5) and steals per game (1.6) to go with averaging 11.4 points last year. Jones registered a team-best five double-doubles a season ago and scored in double figures in 19 games. His 1.5 blocks per game topped the Big West while his 50 total blocks were the fourth-best in CSUN history. Jones also ranked fourth in the Big West in field goal percentage (53.6) and rebounds per game and sixth in steals per game.
Jones helped CSUN post its first conference tournament win in 10 seasons with a 24-point performance against UC Santa Barbara in a first round game at the Big West Championship. He would average 19.5 points on 74.6 percent shooting and 9.5 rebounds in the Matadors' two conference tournament games last season.
In the 2024-25 Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll, CSUN was selected to finish sixth with 57 points. The sixth-place finish in the poll is the highest for the Matadors since 2019. UC Irvine was picked to repeat as Big West regular season champions after finishing first in the poll with 92 points and eight first-place votes. UC Santa Barbara was second with 85 points and two first-place votes followed by UC San Diego in third with 77 points, UC Riverside in fourth with 75 points and one first-place vote and UC Davis in fifth with 67 points. Hawai'i (46), Long Beach State (39), Cal State Bakersfield (28), Cal State Fullerton (22) and Cal Poly (11) rounded out the poll.
Head coach Andy Newman returns for his second season leading the Matadors. In his first season at the helm, Newman guided CSUN to the fifth-best turnaround in the nation as the Matadors went from seven wins in 2022-23 to 19 wins last season. The Matadors registered their first winning season in 15 seasons while the team produced its most wins since the 2007-08 campaign. In 2024-25, CSUN returns three letter-winners and adds 15 total newcomers. Nine of the new faces are transfers with seven coming from Division I schools. In 2022–23 Newman led Cal State San Bernardino to a 31–4 record and the NCAA Division II Final Four and then landed the CSUN job.
We will have our hands full.

So will they - trying to incorporate 15 total newcomers into the roster with three returning players will present their coaching staff with significant problems - how do they keep anyone satisfied?? And how do they have that many players on a D1 roster? Their roster lists 18 players! Unless they’ve quickly worked out PT issues, they might look like we did against Alfred - constant complete turnovers in who is on the court playing, with accompanying difficulty in establishing rhythm. Hopefully we’ll be past that stage now.

Not so concerned with the logistics of playing time (or roster size for that matter). Someone is always going to be unhappy - where ever you go. I was more impressed with Coach Newman's success. Inheriting a 7 win squad and winning 19 games in his 1st season. 1 year does not a trend make - but it speaks well for his ability to recruit and navigate the new "NIL waters" ...
Should be an interesting contest tomorrow. 2 largely unknown commodities at this point. If the RC is rocking - we should take them down. On the other hand - if we get boat raced - ugh - NFG ...

I found it interesting that they haven’t played an exhibition game. Maybe there will be some early jitters we can take advantage of

I agree with Bona82.5 “CSUN is no joke.” — Andy Newman enters his second season as head men's basketball coach. Newman led the program to its first winning season in 15 years with a 19-15 record. Newman coached CSUN to one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation, a 12-game improvement over the season before. Had a historic 76-72 win over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. — Keonte Jones 6’5” was 3rd leading scorer and leading rebounder averaged 11.4 ppg. Was the star for CSUN during Big West tournament averaging 19.5 ppg. Led Big West with 50 blocks. Chosen 1st team for Big West. — Jordan Brinson 6’2” 4th leading scorer. Played just 12 games. CSUN has 3 transfers, who were high ranked high school players. Transfer (schools). — PJ Fuller 6’4” (TCU, Washington ) 4 star ESPN and 247 Sports. Averaged 7.4 ppg at Washington. — Marcus Adams 6’8” (BYU) 4 star 247 Sports, received the John Wooden Award, High School Player of the Year award for Los Angeles. Played just 1 game at BYU scoring 2 points. — Tyler Beard 6’2” (Georgetown, Pacific) freshman season at Georgetown where he appeared in 30 games with two starts averaging 3.0 points ... scored a career-high 23 points. Averaged 9.1 ppg at Pacific. Unlike most years, CSUN appears to be a very challenging 1st game. gomatadors.com/sports/mens-basketball/rostergomatadors.com/news/2024/7/18/csun-mens-basketball-completes-recruiting-class-with-seven-signings-in-the-spring.aspx

Way back in my early SID days, CSUN was in the D2 California Collegiate Athletic Association. They always had competitive basketball teams and the Matadors were a perennial baseball powerhouse.
Glad they have a foothold in the normally rugged Big West. Long Beach State was where my career began im earnest.
Their skipper has a fine pedigree...CS San Bernardino can really play.
This is a good early test for Our Guys. Let's see what we truly have when the score counts.

CSUN looks to be similar level opponent as last season’s opener vs Longwood. Bonnies won by 4 points. It was an even matchup. Longwood went on to win 21 games.

Hopefully CAL-Northridge will be looking ahead to their Wednesday night game at LeMoyne and take the BONNIES lightly.
