Great win for our Bonnies!
I thought the defensive effort was fairly strong. The length and athleticism showed. Good awareness and anticipation. Slight lapses at the end, but overall we did a great job forcing mistakes.
Offensively, still a work in progress - as has already been stated and seemed somewhat apparent from the exhibition. But we also don’t have the set rotation yet, so tough to put a ton into this for now. We definitely need to improve the 3pt percentage, and/or take fewer than 32 attempts.
Still a very long ways to go, but very pleased to start 1-0! Go Bonnies!!!

"... don't push it up the court quickly."
I saw a different game. We had 18 FB pts to their 3.
Our D kept them to 56 pts due in part to creating 21 TOs, 10 steals, 5 blocks and only 14 fouls to their 26.
MOORE played a very effective game as high scorer with 18 pts. Made 6-13 shots, grabbed 9 boards and 2 steals.
We were up 21 pts with 7 mins left but faltered to see them pull within 12 over the next 4 mins. That slip and inability to deal with their full court press late provided an excellent teaching opportunity.
Glad to see us rebound well throughout the game (+5), especially after our poor board play against Alfred. Also happy to see us get 34 FTs to the stripe compared to their 16. Last game we got to the stripe for a mere 9 FTs.
I am concerned about our reliance on the TREY. Tonight 57% of our shots were from deep. CSUN did a good job preventing slashes to the basket. Don't think I saw one good pull up J. I attribute that to CSUN's athleticism and coaching.
Early game TOs caused 18 in total. One more area for the post game mtg to address.
When was the last time we saw a SCHMIDT team go 11 deep other than an exhibition game.

I think we went to the line like 25 times or something. That would be 4 games worth last season

I have mixed feelings about the game. First of all my feelings are better than those of Duquesne fans. The Dukes lost by 5 to Lipscomb at the Cooper Field House. I didn’t see it, but that’s a stunner. The disappearance of Noel Brown was worrisome. CSUN really did not have a true 5, but Noel didn’t take over and again was in foul trouble, showing little development in his ability to defend without fouling. Overall, CSUN just didn’t have many guys who could score, and I worry about what will happen when we play a team that won’t panic when good athletes challenge them and will take better care of the ball. So I worry about how we will do against a more veteran team. Both teams had 20 field goals so we won the game at the free throw line, which I didn’t like. On the other hand, Bowen is a very solid point guard. Also, Moore showed he’s capable of taking over the game.
.We knew this team was going to present a work in progress just to get to be a steady, solid team. but I fear we may be in that phase well into league play. But it’s a win.

I think we saw what we expected to see. We need to temper our expectations somewhat but we won by more than what was projected- improved over our first showing vs. Alfred. Take care of business against Canisius. GO BONAS.

Tonight was an opportunity for Schmidt to play a lot of guys and try many combinations. We still won. There is much to figure out, including style of play. I’m betting the rotation will be much tighter come Dec/Jan.
Coach has a lot of speed and athleticism on this roster. I can’t be critical of the many mistakes and lapses because this is what we get in the NIL/portal era. The game looks different. Our guys played fast and hard for the most part — they seemed more unselfish than in the exhibition game.
Many A10 teams struggled tonight… St Louis and Duquesne lost … Loyola is pulling away late but struggled at home vs Chicago State … St Joe’s trailed by 5 to Navy at the half but won by 7.
Keep learning and chopping wood.

That is not Schmidt like and will hopefully get fixed as that will cost us games against good teams. Otherwise, they were surprisingly good for the first game.

I liked the way guys went to the hoop and played up-tempo. Make more threes and FT. All in all not a bad night.

Two observations from last night:
I'm already on the Chance Moore bandwagon. Spectacular first game for him! Loved the effort!!!
Man did I have a moment of Deja Vu last night... Glenn Hagan hasn't played in the RC in like almost 50 years. Last night watching Melvin Council was a MAJOR flashback to one of my favorite Bonnies of all time. That was nuts. Here's hoping Melvin's career is as spectacular and he's off to a great start.

Regarding the fast pace offense question. From what I saw, the guys were good a breaking out and quickly getting the ball into the offensive end mostly by passing, but at that point we seemed to stall. So far, I don’t think anyone has established himself as the fast break finisher. I think eventually, someone will take the lead finishing the fast break by getting to the rim. I think the most likely candidates are Bowen, Moore and Council, with Bolanga also a possibility. Bowen may be limited by his looking to grab rebounds, and that’s probably an overall positive. I think he’s already shown himself to be a much better then average rebounder as a point guard but that could limit his ability to lead or finish the fast break, a limitation I’ll be happy to take if he can consistently sneak in to get rebounds at 6’3”.

An interesting pattern has developed with Schmidt’s substitutions for the 1st game (in the last 3 seasons). Schmidt is using his reserves. — Last night Schmidt used 6 reserves for a total of 59 minutes. —Last season he used 4 reserves for 68 minutes. — First portal season (14-18 record) 4 reserves for 46 minutes. ** It is like without his “Iron 5” Schmidt needs to use 1st game to find his best combination of players, by using many different combinations. Have mix results for the 2nd game. Last season Schmidt found his starting lineup and had few minutes for reserves in that game and for rest of the season. First portal season it took awhile longer. 2nd game saw 70 minutes from reserves, but rapidly reduced after this game. Two big questions; did Schmidt find his starting lineup last night and how much time will reserves see in the next game. — I think Schmidt found his starting lineup with Noel, Lajae, Chance, Melvin and Dasonte. — On the radio with Gary Nease and Don Scholla, Schmidt said “there is not much difference in talent between the top player compared to the 12th player.” Certainly sounds like Schmidt’s going to have a deep bench this season. — Only 3 reserves received double digit minutes with Mike (17) Jonah (10) and Noah (10). Rest of the team Duane (8), Jaxon (7) and Xander (3) while Miles and Kaba didn’t play. It is interesting to note following from attached box score. — Top 5 +/- stat for players; Dasonte +18, Lajae +17, Chance +14, Mike +11 and Noah +6. Melvin had just a +2. — Fast break points 18 for the Bonnies. — Best scoring run 2nd half at 11:32. Observations from above stats. — Chance was Nease and Scolla’s MVP, but it must have been a difficult choice between Chance, Dasonte and Lajae. All 3 were critical in the win. Overall I agree with Chance as MVP. — Mike might have had the best game I’ve seen from a player with modest stats of 0 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. His stats were much lower than the starting centers, but as reflected by +/- he clearly had the best game of any center on the court last night. Mike was a much needed difference maker with his defense, rebounding and hustle. His +11 is smaller, only because he played just 18 minutes. He was a big factor in the game. — Do we have a full court team this season? Last night Bonnies had18 fast break points. During 13 OOC games last season (including exhibition game), Bonnies had just 4 games with double digit fast break points. In both games this season Bonnies 19 and 18 fast break points, which is more than any OOC game last season. — Chance is my MVP for the following reason. He led the Bonnies to their best scoring run. At 14:07 Chance enters the game with Bonnies having a 7 point lead 36-29. Over the next 2 and half minutes the team would outscore CSUN 11-2 for a 47-31 lead. This lineup was Mike, Lajae, Noah, Chance and Dasonte. Last night was an entertaining game between two athletic teams. Looking forward to Canisius game. s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/sidearm.nextgen.sites/gobonnies.sbu.edu/documents/2024/11/4/2535236.PDFgobonnies.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule/2024-25
