Do NOT confuse FGCU (Florida Gulf Cost) with last year’s opponent FAU. This team is not even close to the talent level of FAU. Last season FGCU had a 14-18 record NET 246 and 6th in ASUN. This season FGCU was picked 4th on ASUN Media Day. Keeshawn Kellman was selected to ASUN 10 man preseason team and was named the conference DPOY. They are currently 0-2 with road losses to UNC Greensboro (by 9) and TCU (by 16). Offensively FGCU has some really ugly stats. In the nation; FG% (305th) FGs (330th) 3% (296th) FTA (351st) Rebounds (346th) Points (351st) and there are other stats in the 300s.

— Keeshawn Kellman 6’8” finished 2nd in the nation with FG% at 68.4%. He was 3rd in scoring 12.2 ppg and 1st in rebounding 7.0 rpg. He is currently the team’s leading scorer at 16.5 ppg and shooting an even better FG% at 78.9% also leading rebounder.
— Dallion Johnson 6’3” was team’s 4th leading scorer at 10.8 ppg. Made the team’s most 3 pointers (2.5 per game) and shot a very impressive 39.1% from behind the arc. This season is the team’s 2nd leading scorer at 10.5 ppg. Unlike last season he has has been struggling with his shot from the field 27.6% and from 3s at 21.1%.
** Rahmir Barno 6’0” started 14 games last year at PG. He played exactly half the game and averaged 4.7 ppg. This year Barno has started both games at PG and is averaging 4.0 ppg and has just 1 more assist than turnover (8-7).
Best transfers (transfer school)
— Jevin Muniz 6’6” (Delaware St.) at 14.9 ppg was the 2nd leading scorer for a really bad team 305 NET team. Has a good shot from 3s making 34.9%. This season is the 3rd leading scorer at 9.5 ppg. Has struggled with his shot in the 1st 2 games making 33.3% from the field and 30% from 3s.
— Rory Stewart 6’8” (Rhode Island) played in 9 games. averaged 1.1 ppg. This season is the 4th leading scorer at 7.5 PPG. FGCU’s best 3 point shooter at a solid 38.5% and leads team with 2.5 threes made per game.
— Michael Duax 6’5” (Northern Iowa) averaged 3.8 ppg. Had good shooting stats, but rarely shot the ball as evidenced by his scoring average. This season he averaging 7.0 ppg and has been struggling with his shot from the field 36.4% and from 3s at 33.3%.
Overview
Clearly 6’8” 220 pound Keeshawn Kellman (Grad student in his 6th season) is their star. He is a muscular player, who must dominate underneath with him making 79% of his shots. It will be a challenge for Noel, to keep Kellman at or under his scoring average of 16.5 points a game. Noel fouling is a concern. Very well could see a lot of Noel’s backup, Mike in this game. Kellman is literally the only threat inside. He scored half of his team’s points made from 2 point field goals.
Rest of the team is NOT impressive. Dalton Johnson (10.5 ppg) and Muniz (9.5 ppg) are the next highest scorers. Johnson has a really ugly stat. He takes the most shots and has the team’s worse shooting percentage at 27.6%. He loves taking 3 pointers (takes an unreal 9.5 a game) but only makes 2 a game for 21.1%. Muniz shooting stats are slightly better with him attempting more 2 pointers, but still shoots 33.3% from the field. Next best player is Rory Stewart, who averaged only 1.1 ppg at Rhode Island last season. Still have to keep an eye on him from beyond the arc. He is the only FGCU shooter with a good 3 point shooting percent.
FGCU is an extremely low scoring team averaging 57.5 ppg (352nd in nation). They have poor shooting from the field (39.8%). This is incredible, when you consider Kellman makes 79% percent of his shots. This shows how bad rest of the team shoots. Rest of the team shoots significantly more 3s than 2s. From 3s FGCU made just 27.3%. Key appears to be containing Kellman underneath and defend the 3 point circle (this is where most of the shots will be coming from). Hopefully FGCU doesn’t suddenly get hot from 3s. Unlike Canisius, FGCU has been a poor 3 point shooting team in their first 2 games.
